Welcome to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. In this video, I am bringing you with me to this city
and I'm going to show you the best things you can do when you are in Yerevan
Yerevan is one of the oldest cities in the world. It might come as a surprise to you but Yerevan is
actually older than Rome. In 2018, the city celebrated its 2800th birthday and nowadays
it is home to more than 1 million people, one-third of Armenia's population
Yerevan has a long history and it has been ruled by Arabs, Persians, Turks, Georgians and Russians
You can still see their impact on the city and you can find many Soviet architecture buildings here
Perhaps the most impressive example of Soviet architecture is this giant stairway
The Cascade Complex, one of the main attractions in Yerevan. Tourists come here to climb the stairs
for the best view of the city. If you don't fancy walking all the way up you can go inside
and take the escalator to the top
The climb up here might seem so tough and actually during the hot day it is a bit tough
but it worth the climb because when you are here at the top
you can have a great view of the whole city and you can see Mount Ararat
Mount Ararat is where Noah's Ark landed after the great flood and it is considered to be
the national symbol of Armenia even though it is located in Turkey
The next stop is the modern part of Yerevan, Northern Avenue. This car-free street connects
the Opera House to Republic Square and it is my favorite place in Yerevan
During the day it might seem empty and just a place for shopping but in the evening
it's bustling with people and it is where you can see Armenian street performers
there are a lot of good restaurants and cafes around this area
right now we are in Lavash restaurant one of the most famous restaurants in Yerevan
actually many people who have been in Yerevan or some of the locals they suggested us to come here
the first time we tried to come here they didn't have any table available but lucky for us
today we found a table and I ordered pomegranate drink it's not a fresh pomegranate juice
but it's homemade pomegranate drink let me try it
it is so sweet
we ordered dolma with cabbage leaf which is actually dolma I think it has beef when you
order it in Greece usually you get it without meat but here is different let me try one
it's minced beef and it's so tasty I really like it the other dish we ordered is kinkali
and we tried once we were in Georgia this time we got the fried kinkali
this is how in Georgia they told us we should eat it
I should suck the juice
you can see there is meat inside and I love it
here is gum market where you can find local Armenian products including meat
vegetable and some dry fruit
here you can actually taste whatever they are selling they give you to try
this is for Bruno it's one kind of like candy but Armenian candy with nuts
it's so sweet but the nuts kind of like balance the sweetness I like it thank you
I really like it and I bought it and the price was quite cheap also it's 1000 dirham
the other market you must visit while in Yerevan is Vernissage market
the name is French and means art exhibition preview
if you like flea market as much as I do you should come here
and here you can find a lot of art craft and local products
basically you can find anything and everything here it is a great place to buy a souvenir
this market is open every day and it is located just behind the republic square metro station
Armenia is a Christian country but they have a mosque and it's a blue mosque here
this blue mosque looks like many other mosques in Iran especially in the city of Isfahan
this is the style Iranian use for the mosque blue mosque was built in the 18th century during
the Persian reign over Armenia and it is the only remaining mosque in the country
all other mosques in Armenia were demolished during the soviet era
a visit to Armenia is not complete without visiting the Armenian genocide memorial
the present identity of Armenians was very much shaped by the Armenian genocide
in 1915 when over 1 million people lost their lives
this is definitely not a happy place
but it is important to understand the history of Armenia and its people
thanks for watching and see you in the next video
