"Dwayne Johnson is back for Disney’s latest adventure movie, Jungle Cruise. Along with Emily Blunt and Jack Whitehall, they’re out to find The Tree of Life in the heart of the Amazon.
Dwayne, Emily and Jack caught up with BBC Radio 1’s film critic Ali Plumb about pranks they played on each other, throwing fake punches, and why The Rock’s constantly filming movies in the jungle.
Plus, we find out the nicknames they gave each other during filming. Jack even leaves the chat with a new one!
Jungle Cruise is available in cinemas now."

He's my guy. He's my favourite. Who's your favourite? It's me. I know it.
My favourite is Jack. What? For f*** sake.
Alright, let's get going.
I've tracked the legend to every village, every island. Nothing.
You're searching for something that can't be found.
But you've never had the key.
Ladies and gents, I'm sorry if you can't hear me over this shirt, but let's go.
Emily, I'm sure a lot of people are talking to you about the Jungle Cruise nicknames, right?
You've got Skippy and you've got Pants.
But did I hear correctly in that Mystery Crate video that Jack put up on YouTube that you call Dwayne Toots?
Toots, yes. This is correct. Jack is so happy that this is out there into the world now.
Not only do I call him Toots, but everyone in our team, in our Jungle Cruise family.
My hair and makeup girls now, my publicist, everyone. I have just... everyone calls him Toots.
And I love it.
And there's another one where you call him Dave Gobson?
That's just because I can never remember what his name is.
I keep telling her it's Dwayne Johnson and it's like, Dave Gobson, no.
I'm sort of just trying to help get him known out there in the world, but I just can't get his name right.
That's a shame. And what nickname do you have for Jack? Because I have a suggestion.
I call him everything from, like, Jackerella, Jackarama.
Tight Balls.
Wow.
That's a new one. Just throwing that out there. Let's get that out there into the world. Tight Balls. Jack Tight Balls.
That's your wrestling name.
Like these, right? There you go. This is in honour of you, Jack.
My suggestion after watching Jungle Cruise was going to be Sunburn, but I think Tight Balls.
Tight Balls, that just took it. That will be it. TB.
I was also Jacktion Man.
Jacktion Man, because Jack is supreme at action.
And so Jack and I used to really enjoy sending Dwayne very patronising videos of how to do a stunt sequence.
And we would kind of spell it out for him, how to throw a punch as if he's never done it before.
As if I have nothing better to do with my time.
And Jack, what was my nickname that you called me?
Stunty Blunty.
It slightly backfired, that joke, when we were sending videos of how to throw a punch,
that then six months later we had to reshoot an entire fight scene because I, quote, throw a soft punch.
And it looked so unbelievable when I threw this punch and someone's head went back that we had to shoot it again.
But DJ showed me how to do it and the finished article, I think, is quite impressive.
Yes. Yeah, I'm sure the connection really landed.
I've got a question for you, Dwayne, and I'm sure you've been asked this a million times, but I can't help myself.
After Welcome to the Jungle, Journey 2, Jumanji 1 and 2, Hobbs & Shaw, A Bit, Rampage,
why not Chuck Moana in there as well?
What is the deal with you and jungles?
Get out of the jungle.
I can't. I can't help it.
I know, I know, I know.
Right, because the jungles are mysterious and there's danger in the jungle.
I think your agent says, this will partly shoot in Hawaii, and you go, yes.
That's right.
Well, no, actually it's reversed. I say, here's where we're going to shoot.
We're going to shoot in Hawaii and then everybody says yes.
Who would say no to Hawaii?
Yup.
We were pushing to shoot it all in Richmond Park, but Dwayne vetoed that and we ended up in Hawaii.
It would have looked really lovely.
We could have done it on the Thames.
Yeah.
It could have been Meadow Cruise.
It doesn't have the same ring.
Yup, yup, two tickets to Meadow Cruise, please.
Jungle Cruise 2 will all be set in Henley-on-Thames.
Yes, perfect.
Slightly different vibe.
Speaking of punching in faces, at one point, Emily, you punched Dwayne in the face.
How many takes for that one?
How close did we get to contact?
And did you purposely mess up so you could have another go?
Oh, God, sorry, Frank.
Sorry, strong form.
He said that I clocked his nose once and I didn't.
She absolutely did.
I didn't. He said I skimmed the nose one time.
No, no, no, you didn't.
And it's just because your reflexes are slow. That's the problem.
No, it's because you don't know how to punch.
It was perfect. It was right on angle and you were just like, uh, like slow.
No, no.
Hung over that day.
I was completely hung over and I leaned into the punch, yes.
Yeah, you just, it was just punched tequila breath. That's what happened.
That's it. Just punched right into the breath.
She punched me with all her strength and didn't feel a thing.
Nothing.
And Jack, I need to beg you, please do a travel show up the Amazon with your dad, Emily and Dwayne.
Yes!
Please.
We need to get rid of it.
Bring the reception and get them to send someone up.
I'm not bringing the reception.
They say, can you come and take away a spider for me because I'm frightened.
I'm not frightened.
I mean, I'm very on board for that.
Obviously, my character was based entirely on my father.
I borrowed his wardrobe for it and I can't wait for him to see the film.
Glorious.
By the way, Emily, Dwayne, with your on-set chemistry, it's like Powell and Loy.
It's Grant and Russell.
This back and forth.
When are we getting a two-person comedy stage show?
Like, we need this.
Listen, we should take this on the road.
We're going on the road.
We're going to go all down Henley.
What are we going to call it?
Henley River.
Yeah, it's going to be toots and...
Don't.
You're going to say tits or something, weren't you?
Toots and tits.
No, you said that. I didn't say that.
No, no, no.
Tickets would sell like hotcakes.
They'd sell like hotcakes.
Toots and tits. Here we go.
Toots and hotcakes.
Yes, this is it. You heard it.
Much more family-friendly.
And you could let Jack have a chance at telling jokes on stage.
Give him that opportunity. That would be good of you.
That'd be great.
Put that out there.
You can be the compere, Jack.
Yes, that's perfect.
There are moments, Dwayne, where your character tells loads of really bad, corny dad jokes.
Jack, did you have any advice for that?
There was an amazing scene where Dwayne sells all of those puns to us,
and I remember there was like a list of 20 or 30 of them.
It was my favourite day of the entire shoot.
The rocks you see here in the river are sandstone,
but some people just take them for granted.
Watching DJ just literally do an open mic set in front of us on La Chilla,
it was great.
Emily hated it.
Could be a natural comedian, yeah.
Hated it. Hated it every second.
Emily hated it.
Hated it.
Emily was...
Because she has no British sense of umma.
That's not how you say it.
That is how you say it.
Jack, come on.
You are literally speaking to three British people.
Three British people who will attest that you pronounce the H.
Umma.
Dwayne's still a little upset that he missed out on a role in Mary Poppins,
and hence why he often goes off on a cockney accent.
I should have been in the Lin-Manuel Miranda role.
That could have been me riding up on the bike, you know?
You can't ride a bike.
I don't know why they didn't think Dwayne wouldn't make a good chimney sweep.
That could have been me.
The whole house just collapsing as you went up.
Oh, chim-chimney.
Oh, I got you.
There's a bit in the movie where you guys, Emily and Dwayne,
swing on a vine Tarzan style, right?
Really enjoyed the gag, and then afterwards I thought,
I bet that took like 12 takes and was exasperating.
What were the practicalities of turning into Tarzan?
Honestly, there were no practicalities
other than we couldn't do it without laughing,
because this one was, he took it off the rails.
Like there was not one where, and I was like,
don't mess with me on this one.
Come on, just like do one straight one.
And he'd do things like he wrapped his legs around
so we started to like spin.
I mean, terrible things like that.
He also hiked my pants up so high.
So he did it without me realizing as we were swinging.
They were literally up under my tits.
And then when they cut, it was disgusting.
I was like, we cannot do this.
It was bad.
Classic tits.
You know what's funny is when you see the movie,
there are so many times that when audiences see the movie,
right at the end of these scenes,
before they transition to the next scene,
you'll see smiles on our faces just getting ready to happen
because we're getting ready to laugh out loud.
It was like that every day.
And I didn't hike them up that high.
You hiked them up very high.
No, it was like wedgie height.
It wasn't great.
A little...
The director's note is maybe less for wedgie.
One more time.
Full wedgie.
I say this with love, OK?
I really do say this with love.
But was there ever any worry that Jesse Plemons
and Paul Giamatti's performances might be a bit too subtle?
I was concerned about it.
Stop her!
I feel we needed to.
Especially when Jesse started going the djangle.
Djangle.
Oh, my gosh.
Aleutian!
Aleutian.
Yeah, aleutian!
I loved...
Those guys were great.
I wanted them to crank it up even more.
I wanted them to chew up the scenery
until there were no leaves left on the trees.
I loved it.
I wanted them to go all the way.
You need a Tash-twirling villain in one of these things.
You've got to go all the way.
You do.
I love how you get the evil German guy.
How can we make him eviler?
Get him in a U-boat.
Yes.
Who brings a submarine to the Amazon?
Fire!
Alright, here's the big question.
It's going to be very controversial.
Who was the most late to set most often?
Yeah.
Jack, don't take one for the team.
I'm going to take it for the team here.
Jack, you're an idiot.
Jack was often waiting for two hours.
Jack was the most on time.
I got wise to it, so I was like,
text me when you're leaving your house.
But Jack was not on that text chain.
So, I feel I was second latest.
You were by far captain late.
Although, you've been very early during this press tour.
I have been, yes.
Before you, I showed up before you.
He was here before me today.
Olly, listen.
Here's the thing.
Got a lot of shit going on.
Don't we look gross?
Hey man, this hardest worker in the room,
we're going to drop it.
We're going to drop that shit, okay?
No, we found our groove,
so she would text me,
and she would say,
listen, let me know when you're leaving.
And I was like, got it.
So, I always text her, let her know when I was leaving.
We found our groove.
It took a little bit.
And then they texted me and said,
Jack, they're ready now.
Get out of the gym.
Put down the weights.
Stop what you're doing and head to set.
Yeah.
Because that's what I'm like.
You know, this is my tool,
and I need to maintain it,
even when I'm doing a shoot.
Yeah.
And I've had it.
This was why it was such an amazing experience,
this whole thing.
Everyone has always said to me
that I am like the UK's answer to The Rock.
They say that I'm like what Dwayne would be like
if he'd focus more on cardio.
And it was really nice to come face-to-face
with my fitspiration.
And like, stop having sex.
Yeah, fully.
Grew back my virginity.
Yeah, finally lose it, yes.
On that note,
I say goodbye to all three of you.
Toots.
He's like, get me out of here.
Tight balls.
Wait, that is not sticking.
It is sticking.
It's sticking.
That is not a sanctioned name.
I have lovely, loose testicles.
I will not be called Jack Tight Balls.
I've got to go.
I really do.
I love you all.
Yeah, you've got to say my name.
It's Hotcakes.
Come on, Hotcakes.
And also goodbye to you, Hotcakes.
I punch you all affectionately.
I love you.
Mr. Plum, good to see you, as always.
Always a pleasure.
Bye, guys.
Thanks for watching.
