Welcome to flash or splash, the new climbing game with a twist.
In this week’s video at Rise, Loz and I go head to head in a unique climbing water challenge. We each compete to save ourselves from a splash in the Rise Climbing’s paddling pool (have you ever seen a cooler addition to an indoor bouldering gym?
Who will rise to the occasion and who’ll end up in the water?

So as you can see I'm sat in front of the paddling pool which is quite a unique feature for a
climbing gym I feel but we're we're enjoying it, we're vibing with it. So we thought we would
incorporate this paddling pool into our climb today and Lars very creatively came up with the
concept of splash, no splash or splash. We've picked out three problems, we have three lines each
and then we have to flash each of them or flash one problem or we lose a life so if we fall off
one climb three times then we've lost all of our lives. If we lose one life we have to dunk ahead
is that right? Yeah. If we lose two lives we have to dunk whole body and if we lose three lives
Nathan has to dunk whole body which... Who's the winner really? Feels like quite unfair on Nathan
but we'll try our best to not get Nathan wet. I think now we've like just had a session previously
which we filmed so I think we're nice and warm. Yeah. We've got like a bit of a feel for the
setting so I reckon that we've got a good chance of staying dry. Yeah and we've got a nice cool
down afterwards if we fail. Yeah if nothing else problem one. Let's go. And I want to get out of
Okay so we're deciding who, which lucky individual gets to climb first. We're
going to rock paper scissors so I'm sorry. One, two, three, up.
So you get to decide. Okay then I can throw your Vita. V1. First up is this V1 white problem
which looks, it looks fairly basic but the start move looks maybe like there's a little bit of
spice to it. There's some quite like undercutty rolly over moves so I'm feeling confident but that
doesn't mean anything. We don't know after last time. Nice Hannah. Yeah come on. Easy breezy.
No splash. No splash so far.
Yeah. We both climbed that quite differently. Yeah.
Nice. Okay no splash so far. We're safe. I was quite nervous too. Yeah. Do you think that you
climb well under pressure? No. No. Which is weird because I like confidence.
Next we have another white. This V2 through a steeper part of wall. I mean I don't know if you
call it a roof but it is fairly steep. On a similar kind of hold type actually. Looks okay.
Famous last words. Do you want to go? Should we rock paper scissor every time?
Ready? Every time. Insane.
Okay I'm sorry. Off to you.
Okay. Nice. That's quite a big move really. Come on Hannah. Oh no I should be booing you.
Nice. Lovely. That's lovely. Those holds are fresh. Yeah I find
our skin is going to be very shredded after today. Yeah. The pressure's on.
Oh almost. Go on.
Don't know about that one. Go on. Go on. I'm not sure about the heel.
Yes. Yes. Yes. Nope that's not for me. Go on. Go on. Go on. Yes. Oh no.
That's the head in. That's the head in. The question is
do you have to save up for the end? You don't have to do it and then climb.
Okay I need to reevaluate because that was not the way. Maybe I threw you off a little bit with
the heel. Yeah. You going first. Competitive mindset. Yeah. You going first actually wasn't
a good strategy. Come on. You got it. Come on. Go on. You got it. Yes. Yes. Strong. Come on.
Okay. That's good. You made it look so easy. I took that as like
just like it's going to be easy for me as well but it's not.
As it stands, Loz is unfortunately taking a head dunk but just a head dunk.
I'm looking forward to it actually. It's so warm. It's quite refreshing.
We're two climbs deep. We've got the V3 to come. We've been slowly making our way up through the
grades and the V3, we've looked at it before we started the comp and it looks like it could be a
jump. It looks like quite a tricky jump. Yeah. That's quite a slopey hole. So do you enjoy a
dyno? I love a dyno. You like a dyno? But I can never do them. I like them but they don't like
me. Okay. With you. With you. I don't like them and they don't like me. So I think this will be
the make or break. This could be where it all goes wrong for me I think.
I'm looking forward to trying. It will be make or break for us and for Nathan.
Sorry.
Oh, okay.
Go get it. Yes! That's going to go. Oh, full body.
No! That was so close. Thank you. That will go.
Oh, I hope they have towels.
Come on, you can do it. Did you start in this one? That's where I started, yeah.
You start these quite hard, don't you? Yeah. Come on. Come on, let's go, let's go.
So close. It's flat. Yeah, it's not good actually. It looks like a jug but
deceptive. Do you want another go? I think that's up to Nathan.
So I'm going to hop straight back in for my second go because that felt like,
it felt kind of close but then also, I don't know if it felt, it's like so close but so far. You
know it's there but you don't know if you can catch it. Find out. Yes, Hannah! Does that count?
Yeah, keep going. Oh my god. Come on. Oh man.
Come on, you got this. Come on, let's go, let's go. Yeah! Well done. She did it.
Well done. Thank you. That was, it's better than I thought it was going to be for this part.
You had your hand in a press as well. I keep the hand on. Yeah, it was really cool. Yeah,
give that another go. That's like, you got that. Oh, I've still got to get in this paddling pool.
Okay, let's go. Go on. Are you ready? Are you sure?
Imagine if I fall on this.
You got it. Really go for it. It's good. Come on, come on. Yes.
Oh god. Come on, come on. Stick with it. Yes, come on, come on. That's not nice.
Come on. Yes, come on. That was good. You got it, you got it, you got it.
Yes, wait. Yay! Nathan is so good. Now it's just me that's not.
Nice one. That was so close. It was cool, wasn't it?
We saved the best for last. That was such a good climb. Okay, so like ordinarily getting in a
paddling pool might not be like that much of a, but getting in a paddling pool at a climbing centre
during heatwave where like every other climber that's come before has their like feet in the
pool. Yeah. I feel like that's like a different. I'm actually happier about putting my full body
and then my face. Yeah. I know, but like, I know. No, that was good. I enjoyed that. It like added
a good amount of like nervous motivation. Yeah, I really enjoyed it. I thought the blocks were
like, that pink is really nice. Really cool. Like that move after the dyno as well, I thought was
like really fun. It was definitely the press into the, into that big jump. That was what
I didn't figure out the first time. And then when I saw you do it, I was like, ah, yeah,
it's really nice. But thank you very much to Lars for humouring us with our splash or splash
challenge. And now sadly, Lars has to go and take a dump. We've been given a drape
in case of drape drippage. No, for drippage. This is the drippage drape.
It's like a bath, bath mat.
Who's in first? Is it heads first? Yeah. Can you see okay past the palm tree? Past the terrain.
Right. Just done. Three, two, one. Yeah. Three, two, one.
Just put my face in. I went all the way. Did you? Yeah. Oh no. Lars, that was such poor
dunkage. But I don't know. I don't know why you were being conservative when you've got to get in
completely anyway. Well, I thought I'd save it for that, you know. Should I put the forehead in?
Yeah, why not? Yeah, why not? Yeah. Oh, that was so nice actually. I feel good.
Just over to you now, I think, Lars. Are you ready? Oh no. Are you ready?
This is the best loss of all time. It's like 35 degrees in London. This is actually luxury.
Who needs the bath? You're just chilling with your palm tree.
