Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the history of medieval era continues with a series on the origins of Ukrainians and Ukrainian History. We will cover the identity of Ukraine as a nation starting forming with the Kyivan Rus and the kingdom of Ruthenia, and the Mongol invasion, describe the rule of the Mongols over the lands of Ukraine and its end, how the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth took over and how these events led to the Rise of the Cossacks and the Bogdan Khmelnytsky's rebellion. Describe how Ukraine lived between the three empires - Ottoman Sultanate, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the tsardom of Muscovy (Russia), and how Russia's first invaded Ukraine, using the internal problems of the Cossack Hetmanate. We will focus on how Russia finally ended Ukrainian independence during the reign of Peter I after hetman Mazepa joined the Swedish king Charles XII in his attack on Russia, how the Ukrainians fared in the Russian empire and how the Tsarist regime engaged in the Russification and suppression of the Ukrainian culture. We will discuss the history of the Ukrainians between two world wars, how Ukraine became independent and then lost its independence and how millions of Ukrainians died in the Holodomor, and end the video with a section describing the history of Ukraine within the Soviet Union and during the independence period, from 1991 to the invasion by Russia.
