Hello! How are you doing guys? Hope you're doing good. Today we take a little detour
and instead of doing actual Italian, what we do is we have a look at English words in
common use, ok? And the sub-topic of today is food. So, basically these are foreign words
that have become part of the language, of the Italian language. Let's start from the
first one. As you can see there's a warning sign here and this is because the word menu
actually comes from French, therefore in Italian you pronounce it in French. So you do have
the same word in English, but basically what you want to do is you want to pronounce it
as if there was an acute accent at the very end. So basically it's MENU. Normally, if
this was a normal Italian word, then you would pronounce it MENU, and not menu, but the way
it's pronounced in Italian is MENU, and of course the meaning is exactly the same as in English.
Hamburger, same meaning as in English, it comes from the English language, and it's pronounced
AMBURGER, so it's very different from the original pronunciation. Self-service, exactly
the same meaning as in English, pronounced SELF-SERVICE, ok? So this is the pronunciation.
And mix, pronounced MIX, ok? So these words are particularly easy because although they
come from different languages, their meaning hasn't changed. Sometimes the meaning changes
when a country starts using a foreign word. In this case, the meanings have been retained.
How would you ask for a menu in Italian? So, assuming you're sitting down and you are in a
restaurant, waiting for a waitress, and she comes along and you want to ask for a menu. Now,
you should know how to say this, because we've covered pretty much everything you need for this.
Now, how to say EXCUSE ME, first of all? Exactly, SCUSI. I would like, VORREI. We've already seen
this. It's very useful, so I recommend you learn it off by heart. First person singular,
I would like, VORREI. Now, a menu. I haven't told you, but the word MENU is masculine. Same
as HAMBURGER. These are masculine words. So, VORREI UN, because we need the indefinite article
in the masculine singular form. UN MENU. So, this is enough, but if you want to be even more polite,
you can add PER FAVORE. This means, please, and we've already seen this as well. So,
this is a perfectly correct sentence in Italian, using everything we know. SCUSI,
VORREI UN MENU, PER FAVORE. This is how you say this in Italian, or even more correct,
IL, because the menu is only one. So, you may as well want to use the definite article,
masculine form, singular case. IL MENU, PER FAVORE. Because this is a foreign word,
the plural case doesn't change. IL MENU. I'm not sure, but I think, because of the way you
pronounce it in Italian, MENU, you have to put the acute accent after the word, because otherwise,
you would read MENU. But because it comes from French, and because the pronunciation hasn't
varied much, Italians pronounce it MENU. So, there must be an acute accent at the very end. Add it
in your notes. Easy enough. I hope to see you guys in the next video. Don't forget to like,
and subscribe, if you haven't yet. See you guys soon. Bye.
