Riding into Colorado and some high mountain campfire cooking at a remote lake.
Right now I'm in the middle of my summer ride. It's a one month approximately 6,000 mile ride
from my home down in southern Arizona up to northwest Montana and then back down through
the Rocky Mountains. So right now I'm in the little town of Yampa, Colorado. It's a little
ways south of Steamboat Springs and I'm getting ready to head up into the mountains. So I stopped
here to get some information about the Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway. It says to allow two and a
half hours to drive the 82 mile byway with about 40 miles of gravel and there's gas here in Yampa
at the start and there's gas on the other end. I don't know if we're going to make it all the
way across to Meeker tonight. I'm kind of hoping that we don't. I think we should spend the night
in the mountains. I've stacked up with food and supplies here so we can have a little cookout
up in the mountains as we travel this scenic byway. So let's get on the road and do that.
Boy does that hit the spot. You definitely don't have to eat bad when you're out camping in the
woods on a motorcycle. It's kind of like backpacking but you can carry more on a motorcycle than you
can on your back so you can eat better. You don't have to live off of freeze-dried food.
What a beautiful place here. I'm liking Colorado so far. It's gentle. It's mellow. It's not as
harsh as some of the places I've been yet and it's just got a real nice feel to it,
this part of Colorado. I think I'm going to enjoy this journey as we continue
working our way down to Arizona and I'm hoping sometime next week that my girlfriend will come
up and join me for the last leg of this journey. She has a brand new BMW 800GS and 850 and I know
she's itching to get out and do some big rides so hopefully she'll come join me in southern Colorado
and we can ride back into southern Arizona together.
