An excavator, also known as a digger, is a powerful piece of heavy construction equipment
primarily used for excavation. Excavators come in various sizes, from compact models to massive
machines capable of moving vast amounts of earth. They are versatile and used in a wide range of
applications, including construction, demolition, landscaping, and mining. And here are four
excavators from Caterpillar and Liebherr. Caterpillar has released its next-generation
CAT 6060 hydraulic shovel, which has multiple design enhancements for better performance
and increased durability. The CAT 6060 features updated engines, optimized hydraulics,
heavy-duty structures and undercarriage, CAT electronics, and a state-of-the-art cap.
The twin CAT 3512E engines are designed for high-performance and fuel-efficient operation,
with the updated design boosting reliability and extending the time between overhauls by 10 percent.
Fuel efficiency is improved by 10 to 15 percent compared with previous face shovel models and 3
to 5 percent for the backhoe configuration. Operators also enjoy reduced maintenance
needs with engine oil and filter change intervals doubled to 1,000 hours.
The new shovel is also fully integrated into Caterpillar's product support systems for efficient
CAT dealer services. With a 600-ton class capacity, the shovel's bucket payload is around 61 tons per
pass, in both face shovel and backhoe configurations. The 6060 is a four-pass match with the CAT 793
mining truck and a five-pass match with the CAT 794AC mining truck. The undercarriage and slew
rings have also been updated to maximize productivity and provide a lower cost per ton.
The upgraded cab can be heated and ventilated and has two additional seats, a full-size seat and
laptop desk for a trainer and fold-up seat for an observer, this three-seat design being the
first in this class of shovels. The 6060 also monitors operating data through sensors located
throughout the shovel, which records faults and gives audible and visual notification of any
issues to the operator and it comes ready to accept CAT Mindstar Solutions technologies
to enhance safety, efficiency and reduce operating costs.
As well as the next-generation diesel-powered 6060, Caterpillar also offers the electrically
powered 6060AC face shovel for mines that are optimized to house such machines.
The Liebherr R9800 combines flexibility and productivity to meet customer expectations
as this Liebherr mining excavator comes with a choice of either Cummins or MTU as their preferred
diesel engine partner, while an electric drive version is also available. The pairing of the
T264 or T284 mining truck with the R9800 provides a cost-effective, highly productive mining
solution for large-scale mining operations. The R9800 follows the Liebherr design philosophy of
maximizing the machine's performance by improving the efficiency of all individual subsystems.
Engineered for optimum serviceability, the machine is designed to ensure maximum uptime.
The R9800's modern cab creates a comfortable working environment ensuring peak operator
performance every shift. Equipped with two massive 16-cylinder V engines, the R9800 excavator is
able to produce 4,000 horsepower. Customers can choose from the Cummins 16V QSK60 series,
the MTU 12V 4000 series, and even an electric-powered version.
While the R9800 is drastically larger than other excavators, its fuel consumption is quite small.
A typical excavator requires roughly 20,000 liters of fuel per day. The R9800, which is
30% bigger than other excavators, only consumes 15% more fuel than other models.
Caterpillar has launched its new 6040 hydraulic mining shovel fitted with added engine
configuration to elevate its efficiency. Boasting two fuel-efficient CAT C32 engines,
the new shovel has the appropriate settings to meet U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final, EU Stage V,
and China Non-Road Stage 3 emission standards. The twin C32 configuration is also complemented
by an engine package including maintenance-free diesel oxidation catalysts. While the shovel
doesn't require diesel exhaust fluids slash AdBlue or diesel particulate filters.
With an engine oil extension and heavy-duty undercarriage, the 6040 hydraulic mining
shovel is a versatile vehicle designed to reduce maintenance costs and increase uptime.
Other improvements on CAT's 6040 shovel include an increased service life with its heavy-duty
load rollers and idlers now featuring duocone seals, steel-back bronze bearings and fixed-axle
technology. Such innovations are also designed to eliminate overheating during travel.
The 6040 hydraulic mining shovel connects to CAT Mindstar Solutions' comprehensive
suite of integrated technology, with the manufacturer's product LinkElite hardware
also available, delivering enhanced communication and data transfer to both local servers and clouds
at the same time. Liebherr R9600 G8 crawler-excavator high performance for construction
and mining applications. The R9600 is the undisputed leader in the 600-ton class.
This latest generation heavy-duty excavator not only has the highest bucket capacity in its class,
but also burns 20% less fuel than its predecessor the R996B.
The R9600 is equipped with two QSK-50 Cummins engines. In standard backhoe configuration with
heavy-duty wear package, the R9600 is equipped with a 37.5 cubic meter bucket to provide an
ideal truck-slash-shovel match with Liebherr mining trucks. The Liebherr R9600 G8 crawler-excavator is
designed to perform complex construction and mining operations. The excavator is equipped
with a powerful engine that provides high performance and reliability. Robust design
and use of high-quality materials guarantee a long service life. The electronic control system
allows the operator to work with high precision and comfort. The Liebherr R9600 G8 excavator
features a large bucket that speeds up task completion and increases productivity. The
crawler chassis provides excellent cross-country ability on various types of soil. Additional
features such as automatic lubrication and equipment condition monitoring make operation
more convenient and safer. Designed to tackle all applications globally, the R9600 is built
to last more than 80,000 machine operational hours. The R9600 utilizes the latest quality
control systems to ensure the best reliability and highest performance. The R9600 features a
new cab designed by operators for operators. It is a state-of-the-art 14 cubic meter first-class
workspace. The cab design reduces vibration and limits noise to 69 dB, providing a comfortable
working environment for the operator. The R9600 offers a perimeter visibility system comprising
of four cameras at strategic locations on the rotating upper carriage. The dedicated
monitor inside the cab provides continuous 270-degree vision around the machine.
