Finger Timer for Swimmers

Is this new finger stopwatch timer a game changer for swimmers?
We're going to take it to the pool today and test it out with some of my friends.
Let's go get a workout in.
Hopping in is going to feel good.
Oh, that's amazing.
We're going old school today, dude.
Old school parachutes.
You know how old this thing is?
It's disgusting.
It smells bad.
Sometimes the old way is the best way.
5-100s, strong, resisted.
And then we're going to go fast.
Oh, you're crazy.
Look what John just did all the way down.
This is called old man strength.
Yeah, that's one of the worst things when you just push off the wall and your foot
catches the cord or gets in between your toes.
Oh, it gives me chills thinking about it.
For funsies, I'm working on my backstroke today.
I'll just be right here.
I'm not going to go anywhere, dude.
That's crazy.
Oh my gosh.
My heart is so high.
Dude, the worst is when you push off the wall, you take one kick and then you just stop.
It's like yeet.
Now we have a newer model parachute that John's going to try out.
Hold it up.
Let me see what it looks like.
Let's see if this is harder.
Dude, Van's already leaving.
Gosh dang it, dude.
Oh, get to the wall.
Get there.
Was that harder or easier?
It's hard to say.
I was a little more tired going into it.
Felt about the same to me.
Yeah, put socks on.
Let's make it harder.
Van, you're not even out of breath, dude.
This isn't fair.
We're going to make it harder.
I'm going to use the finger timer on this 100 so we get an exact time.
You know exactly how slow I'm going, even though my heart rate is really high.
No, I forgot to click it.
I didn't even get a time.
Dang it.
Van's not even breathing hard.
This isn't fair.
I will get a time in the next one.
Some days you don't feel good.
Doesn't matter.
Here we go.
120.4.
Oh my gosh.
I'm going so slow, but I'm trying so hard.
No gear on the last one.
See what we go.
Can I break 130?
Dang it, John.
You waited.
Yes.
124.
Oh my god.
I'm glad we did that.
I was a little nervous.
I'm different.
A little scared, but it was good.
Look at all that.
All right, John and I are about to race to 53.
I'm going to time myself, see what we get.
If it comes down to the last 10 meters, I'm going to sprint, Cody.
I had 23.1.
23.1.
Van's going to do a 50 breaststroke for time.
We're going to compare finger watch to actual watch.
Let's not forget, Van's a 50.100 breaststroker.
What will he go?
I had you at 27.54.
What'd you have?
27.87.
Wow.
Okay.
So two and a half tenths off.
Hey, that's a good 50.
Look at that mustache, dude.
Trim that mustache.
You're going 25.
The main thing we're learning is not to click it too early when you leave the wall,
because when a professional coach times you,
they start it right when your feet leave the wall,
and it's hard to do that perfectly.
At least we're getting used to using the finger thing.
Van's going to rip a 50 freestyle.
Are you going to max it out?
We'll try and max it out.
He's going to max it out, and we'll see how fast he goes.
He is cooking right now.
He is cooking.
Now, ladies and gentlemen, I know I've said it before,
but Van goes 18 in the 50 yard freestyle.
John is just trying to get under 20 this season.
I didn't get it.
I had you at 21.21.
Van didn't quite click it, so he didn't get a time on the finger timer.
It's tough when you're going all out.
You got to really click it, but let me give it a shot.
Hitting that when you're trying to go all out is going to be hard.
Yeah.
There's too much to think about.
25 free, all out, no breath.
Let's see what I get.
I had 10.73.
I finished with my right hand, and it's hard to touch the wall and click it.
Yeah.
Right.
Yeah.
So right when I hit it, my hand kind of collapsed in the wall,
and then I clicked it, but we're within two tenths.
It's definitely worth it.
If you are truly by yourself and you wanted a time, it's pretty legit.
I give it a strong endorsement,
and they're not paying me for this.
I just bought this for like $30 on Amazon for funsies.
Here's a really cool master swimmer.
Told me about it at my most recent clinic, and I was like,
whoa, I've never seen one of those before.
They've been around for a while.
Had you ever seen one before?
No.
Yeah.
Definitely worth a try.
Click, time goes.
Click, stop.
Click, reset.
Click, click, click.
All right, John, what are you doing?
Dude, I think I was a little quick,
but I had you at 10.79.
Even if I was quick, even...
Oh, that's true.
But even if I was quick, you're still sub 11.
He's not agreeing with me.
Your stomach is upset?
We worked too hard this morning.
Don't throw up in the pool.
Don't do it.
That is everything I did this morning,
from the lift to the 45 minutes of hacky sack,
which I guess I should film a little bit of.
We're actually getting kind of good.
We can do some tricks.
We can pop them over, and we feel like fun little 13-year-old kids.
Hitting around a hacky sack.
Currently, our training for the sub 20-second pitch freestyle is going well.
I haven't had a bad practice in like almost two weeks.
I'm feeling pretty good about it.
Even though I've been traveling nearly every weekend for swim clinics,
I've done a good job of like getting my sleep in,
making sure that I'm eating,
and I'm not eating garbage when I'm traveling.
It's really easy to get into a cycle where like,
you know, I get some junk food,
especially coming off of Halloween,
but diet's been super clean.
Also, just like basic things like hydrating.
You know, like when I travel, when I fly,
I make sure I drink a lot of water.
Like I gotta be peeing a lot.
Pee a lot.
Like drinking tons and tons of water,
and I just feel better.
And as I said a long time ago,
I've just completely cut out alcohol.
Like for the remainder, and it feels good.
Like it just, it's all kind of lining up.
Most consistent training I've had in a long time.
I feel really, really good about it.
I think I might do a few more 25s max.
I do like, yeah, you know, I was like,
as I was talking to my camera,
I'm like, I'm probably wrapping it up as I'm warming down,
but now I'm like, I think I need to do a little more.
I need to do a little more.
I want to do like four 25s, all out, no breath on like 40.
Just see what I can go.
Test it out.
You know, on your good days, you gotta go.
You know, when the peacock wants to fly,
you gotta let it spread its wings.
You gotta let it go.
That's a joke that I hope people pick up on.
I'm a peacock, you gotta let me fly.
Before I rip these last few 25s,
I am scheduling events for next year.
And I even have a few open dates
through the remainder of the year.
So if you want to book me for a swim clinic
or a speaking event,
send me an email to codymillashow at gmail.com
or head to ultimateswimmer.com
and request a clinic there.
That is the process.
It's going to be a lot of fun.
I'll come out, I'll race you.
We'll go off the blocks.
I'll share some Olympic stories,
give you a fun motivational speech.
It's been a lot of fun.
I'm going to do an awful lot of these this coming year.
My underwaters have felt pretty good today.
10-4, nice start.
Uh-oh, uh-oh.
Cody's hurting a little bit on this one.
Let's get him through.
You got it, buddy.
Well, we stayed under.
That's good.
I still think those 5-100s was harder.
Consensus on the finger timer.
It's a good $35 investment.
If you truly are by yourself,
maybe you're at a pool that doesn't even have
a regular pace clock.
Maybe it has an old school,
traditional finger counter pace clock, you know,
and you want to get something a little more accurate.
As we saw at workout today,
it's difficult with maximum effort sprints,
especially if you finish with the same hand
that the timer is on.
But even with that,
you're within a tenth or two of accuracy.
So it's, yeah, it's very, it's very cool.
