Have you always wanted to learn a language but thought it was impossible? Thinking it'd take years, and you have to be in the native speaking country? I decided to put that to the test. This is a self learning journey I undertook after being inspired by Youtuber "Ikenna". Hope this inspires everyone watching that it IS possible to learn a language to an extent in a year! I If you are interested to learn more on this curious 2nd leg of this journey, subscribe to the channel! Do let me know the language you always wanted to learn (and why), and what were the reasons stopping you. Any tips and tricks are also openly welcomed!
The first time I heard him speak French, well I heard him speak French, I was surprised.
Here I began my journey by enrolling myself to 12 beginner classes
to learn the basic grammar rules before I undertake the journey on my own.
This was me after the first few classes.
I later on started with my self-learning journey
through audio lessons
and other materials as well.
I did it as consistent as I can.
I learned that to effectively learn a language, I had to immerse myself in it.
It wasn't going to be ideal since I was living in Malaysia,
so I created the immersion myself.
I listened to French music every time I was in the car.
I watched French movies and series.
Poisson, poisson, soupe de poisson.
Soupe de poisson.
And I attended any French events near me.
Which by chance led me to the Allianz Francaise library which was open to the public
where I started to read in French from the selection of French books they had.
Another book that we bought from Allianz Francaise and it's a children's book.
Les parents demandent aux enfants d'aller chercher des fruits dans la forêt.
So one day the parents asked the children to go and search for fruits in the forest.
This was my progress after four months of learning.
En septembre, je vais voyager à Paris en France pour trois jours.
Je vais visiter mon famille à Bruxelles en Belgique.
Fast forward a couple of weeks and I was on the next flight to Europe.
I knew on this trip I had to challenge myself to speak French
every chance I got.
A bientôt.
People walking on the stairway.
Elevator.
Touch.
Drinking coffee in Paris.
Check.
Is it?
In Paris.
Amazing.
Chez Paul.
Bonjour.
What do you want to get?
Salad.
Une salade?
Une salade avec une pain?
Avec tuna?
Salade?
Yeah, salade.
You stop here.
I couldn't get enough of the beautiful city of Paris.
But I had to make my way to Belgium.
Another French speaking country which I was about to discover.
We won't leave until you're all in the grave.
...to the three men who came to see Michel Phalle to get healed in the way he did.
What are you doing, Jean?
What are you doing?
I'm doing the same thing as there.
There, but just in wood.
Just in a garden?
A little garden, yes.
A little garden.
For the children.
Don't remove it.
We're going to put a little more soil.
We're going to put more soil.
Add more.
The little garden, right?
Yes, and then we'll have little plants to put.
It's working. It's working well.
What's your reaction of the Manneken Pis?
He's making loads of money taking a piss.
Another thing that's famous here in Belgium, besides the fries, are the waffles.
Better than McDonald's?
Better than McDonald's.
So it's been one year. I've messed up.
One of the crucial things I learned for language learning is consistency is key.
And unfortunately, I did not do that.
Hence, in the remaining 20 weeks of my journey, my learning progression was evidently cut back.
Nonetheless, it didn't mean I didn't study at all.
It's just that from before, I was studying every day, 7 days a week.
But then, I started studying 2 to 3 times a week.
And that's what happened.
During those remaining 20 weeks was where crazy things started happening.
One of the things that really got to me was I could finally watch French movies, or French media in general, with French subtitles.
Think of a tool and colors.
A bird.
A red marker.
I thought of a blue card.
By chance.
And the thing is, I could now start small conversations with my French friends.
And some of them were actually surprised that I could speak French with them.
And that was crazy.
Andrine, what was your reaction when I spoke French with you?
Ok, super.
Paris is almost bilingual in French.
Were you surprised at that moment?
Yes.
No, the first time I heard you speak French, well, I heard him speak French, I was surprised.
After 7 months, it's great. It's a very good level already.
Yes, yes.
Bravo, Fahid.
You listen, you listen.
I even reconnected with my old French friend, Romain.
And we had a conversation through Skype.
So, this is how it went.
Hi, Romain.
It's been a long time.
Yes, it's been a very long time.
Do you remember me?
Yes, yes, yes, I remember you.
It's been a while.
Do you take French lessons or not?
Yes, yes.
No, no.
But no.
I only learned the language at home.
I see.
That's good.
That's not bad.
Obviously, I'm far from fluent in French.
But it shows that after one year, you could achieve a good level of basic conversational French.
That was my one-year journey of learning French.
I hope you guys enjoyed it.
Things I learned from this is, number one, consistency is key.
You have to at least study 30 minutes a day and keep it consistent.
Immerse yourself in the language.
Watch French media.
Listen to French music.
Read French books.
And that would help tremendously.
Secondly, have the willingness to learn.
Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
Because you are learning.
And don't get discouraged if you do make mistakes.
Because that's the process of learning.
If you guys are interested in the method, just let me know.
And I'll share another video explaining what I did in order to get to this stage.
One of the YouTubers that really inspired me, and you guys can check him out, is Ikenna.
I'll leave the link in the description below.
So please check him out.
J'espère que cette histoire vous a inspiré pour apprendre votre langue préférée.
