Who spends their days climbing in trees, leaping high up in the sky,
or switching without ease? Who calls out in yelps, grunts, or screeches?
Who lives together in groups we call troops? Well, it's monkeys, of course!
Monkeys live in many different kinds of habitats.
They can live on mountains, jungles, grasslands, rainforests, and even cities!
Many monkeys are arboreal monkeys. That means that they live in the trees.
Other monkeys live mostly on the ground. Snow monkeys are called macaques. Many of these
live in the mountains of Japan. To keep warm in the winter, they bathe in the hot mountain water.
The water is heated inside the earth and bubbles to the surface.
Snow monkeys like to relax and play in the warm water.
New World monkeys live in parts of Central and South America.
They are small, have flat noses, and live in trees.
This is a Capuchin monkey. You can find him in parts of Central and South America.
Old World monkeys live in parts of Africa and Asia. They are larger and their noses are not flat.
They live in mountains, grasslands, towns, and forests. They usually sit on their bottom pads.
This is a Vervet monkey. You can find him in parts of Africa.
Monkey mothers have a very strong bond with their babies. This bond helps babies learn from them.
Monkey babies stay close to their moms for their first year.
Young monkeys play together. They love to wrestle and tumble each other.
When boys are older, they usually go off to join another troop.
Most girl monkeys stay with their moms and then one day,
they will eventually raise their own families.
Monkeys have strong bonds with the other members of their troop.
Grooming is the main way monkeys show their care. Mothers groom babies, females groom other females,
and couples groom each other.
Here are some fascinating facts about monkeys. The loudest monkey is called the Howler.
We can hear them up to three miles away.
The tiniest is the Pygmy marmoset and it's about the size of a banana.
The biggest monkey is a male mandrill and can weigh anywhere from 77 to 100 pounds.
The furriest monkey is called the Golden Snub-nosed monkey.
The fur keeps them warm in the cold mountains of China where they live.
And the fastest monkey is the Patas and can run up to 35 miles per hour.
That's as fast as a racehorse. Pretty awesome, huh?
