On a mountainous island in Japan, an elderly couple lived with their loyal dog Shiro. One day, Shiro found gold, and the couple shared the wealth with the village. Greedy neighbors kidnapped and killed Shiro, but a tree sprouted from his grave. The couple made a mortar from the tree’s wood, which produced gold when making rice cakes. The greedy neighbors destroyed the mortar, but trees blossomed from its ashes. The couple was rewarded by the imperial court, living happily ever after, while the neighbors were punished.
