Star poop star.
Fly hell.
Hand floor.
Water?
Can you guess which Korean words I'm thinking of?
A few weeks ago, we posted a little quiz about some compound words on our YouTube community tab.
Voice in Korean is 목소리, which literally means neck sound.
And seal is 물개, and it's a compound word of water and dog.
In the comments, many of you shared other fun compound words that we thought we'd like to introduce through the lesson.
So here we have 10 cute and fun compound words.
Guess the meaning of them from the joint smaller words.
We're Talk To Me In Korean, and you can learn to speak Korean through a systematic curriculum on our website at TalkToMeInKorean.com.
The first word is 별똥별.
별 is star, and 똥 is poop. So it's star poop star.
What do you think it is?
The answer is a shooting star.
Shooting stars usually fall down through the sky. So long ago, people must have thought that they were poop from some stars.
What beautiful poop they are.
Number two, 코뿔소.
코, nose. 뿔, horn. 소, cow. Does anything come to your mind?
코뿔소 is a rhinoceros, a cow that has a horn on its nose.
Kind of makes sense, right?
But from what I gather, they say rhinos are closer to horses than cows. So 코뿔마을 would be more correct, I guess.
Anyway, next.
The next one is 물고기. 물, 고기. Water meat.
If you don't know this word, it might be hard to guess the meaning.
물고기 is a fish.
What's funny is, there's a different word for fish as food, which is 생선.
So in Korea, live fish is actually being called water meat until it is cut to be served on your plate.
The next one is 파리지옥.
It's a compound word of 파리, fly, and 지옥, hell.
So it becomes fly hell.
What on earth is a fly hell?
It's a venus fly trap, a plant that eats insects.
Well, its Korean name is definitely scarier than the English one.
I wonder what it's called in other languages.
Let me know.
All right. The fifth one is 손바닥.
손 is hand.
바닥 means floor, the flat bottom part of something.
What is hand floor then?
손바닥 refers to your palm. It's flat like the floor, right?
All right, then what is the sole of your foot?
This is 손바닥.
This is 발바닥.
Foot is 발, right? So the floor, the flat bottom part of your foot is 발바닥, 손바닥.
Another compound word related to your body.
손목.
손 is hand. 목 is neck.
Hand neck?
If you consider your hand as your head,
where would be the neck of your hand?
손목 is the wrist. Then what do you think 발목 means?
It's the ankle, you know.
The next one, 안경집.
안경, glasses. 집, house.
Glasses house? What would it be?
It's a glasses case. Then can you guess what 칼집 is? 칼집, knife house?
Yes, 칼집 is the word for a sheath, a case for the blade of a knife or a sword.
The eighth word is 주먹밥. 밥, cooked rice. 주먹밥 must be something about food.
주먹 is the fist. Then 주먹밥 is?
A rice ball. Not sure if they look like fists.
Number nine. This one is an easy one.
얼룩말. 얼룩 means a spot or a stain.
말 is a horse. Horses that have spots on their body.
Zebras. 얼룩말.
All right, the last one, 술고래.
술, alcohol, 고래, whale.
Alcohol whale?
Here's a hint.
They're not whales. And if you think of the English idiom, drink like a fish,
술고래
refers to a heavy drinker.
If you've ever watched whales gulping seawater to have krill, like from documentaries, you'll get the point.
It's hard to continue learning languages if you're not having fun with it.
I hope our Korean lessons are fun and useful enough to serve as fuel for your motivation so that you can keep learning Korean.
Talk talk every day. Bye.
