The coastal forests of eastern Australia are the stage for one of the country's
most eccentric characters, a male Saturn Bowerbird.
He is putting the finishing touches on his bower.
He uses a mixture of dirt and plant material
mixed with his own saliva to paint the walls of the bower.
There is only one thing left to do, practice his performance.
All this noise has attracted the attention of a female.
Now is his time to shine.
But something isn't quite right.
This female is in fact a young male.
How embarrassing.
Perhaps it's time for a break.
But leaving the bower unattended is risky.
There are thieves lurking in this neighborhood.
It's the young male again and he has an appetite for destruction.
He both wrecks the bower and attempts to fix it at the same time.
This bizarre behavior is all part of the young male's learning process.
Eventually, he will master the art of bower construction.
But in the meantime, maybe a couple of trinkets for his own collection will do.
The owner has returned.
He has to tidy up this mess before a female arrives.
Almost done.
Perfect.
He is just in time.
A visitor has arrived.
And this time, it's a female.
What will she make of his performance?
It's just not his day.
Well, there's only one thing left to do.
It's back to tidying.
Over the next few months, he will continue to perfect his bower and dance routine
in an effort to impress a female.
For this male though, it's just another day in the life of a satin bower bird.
