Colombia is the country of party. They have 18 public holidays and over 150 festivals.
And today I will give you a little overview of some of them.
Welcome to Colombia!
Today we are hosted by Casa Galeria, a very nice coffee right in my neighborhood,
in El Chorro de Quemeo. And they have very good coffee, I'm going to get one soon.
And I can suggest you coming here and they have so many different styles of coffees
and different types of beans and whatever. You should come here and find out what to get here.
So in Colombia we have over 18 public holidays and over 150 festivals all over big Colombia.
Let's start with the first one, Carnaval Blancos y Negros.
This festivity happens end of year and beginning of year.
And it's in Pasto, in the department of Nariño, right next to the border to Ecuador.
And this is an amazing event, which I have to go. I still didn't make it there.
And for example, on one day all the people are getting white painted faces.
And the other day everybody gets a black painted face.
And this is to show that we are all the same, to mix the culture, mix the poor and rich,
like mixing everybody, that everybody is the same.
Those festivities have their origin in the ancestors, in the indigenous population.
And today they are celebrating three days in the old year and three days in the new year.
Then the second one, we have Festival Mundial de la Salsa.
So it's like the world festival of salsa, which happens in Cali.
This is in September in Cali, in El Valle de Cauca.
And as you can imagine from the name, it's all about salsa.
A cab driver in Cali explained to me once,
if you as a man in Cali are not able to dance salsa, you will never marry in your life.
Never ever.
So everybody dances salsa in Cali.
Everybody is crazy about this in the city.
And this is why they also have the festival.
So during the festival you see exhibitions, their best performance.
It's... what to explain more?
Everything about salsa.
And I think it's worth going.
Then we have the Easter week in Popayán.
Popayán, to me, the easiest way to explain this city is like Cartagena,
but with a comfortable climate.
It's a beautiful city and it's very catholic.
So people celebrate their belief and during Easter week they have masses,
they have lots of catholic activities.
And if you like that, Popayán is the place to go for celebrating Jesus.
Then we have the Feria de Manizales, the Manizales fair.
Manizales is the capital of the department Galdas and is in the coffee triangle.
And during that festival you see amazing things.
It's not just about coffees, but for example what are you gonna see?
Those wheelie jeeps which drive all over the place.
They pack them full with coffee and weights and then they do wheelies.
Yeah, you heard me.
Wheelies during the parade.
So you have those jeeps on two wheels and dancing, doing circles and it's just crazy.
Crazy shit, I tell you.
This festival is so big and so good.
It's only every second year here in Bogotá.
And during that festivity or that festival you have theaters, you have outdoor artists.
It is just an amazing cultural event.
It's the highlight of Bogotá every second year.
The agenda is packed with plays, with concerts, theaters, exhibitions.
And it's actually one of the biggest theater festivals in the world.
Then we have the Cartagena International Music Festival.
It's in January and it's all about classic music.
If you're a lover of classic music, think of Cartagena in January.
Because this city is so beautiful, it's so historic.
And enjoying this classical music festival, it's just a symbiosis.
Can you imagine being in this very nice old town, history all over the place
and listening to classic music?
There's nothing better than that.
And now we come to my personal two highlights.
First, there's the Flower Festival in Medellín.
I've been there two years ago and I was blown away.
Medellín stands still during the Flower Festival.
There are different parades.
You have exhibitions in different areas in Medellín.
And a good plan is to go to one of the fincas nearby
and see how they actually grow the flowers and they prepare their bouquets.
So the main parade consists of...
Oh, it's very long.
So you have the army, you have police force.
But the principal part is actually people carrying those huge flower backpacks,
bouquets, which weigh up to 80 or 100 kilos.
And people are freaking out.
This event is just amazing.
One of the most beautiful things I experienced here in Colombia.
And last but not least, Carnaval en Barranquilla on the Caribbean coast.
It's known as the second largest carnival after Rio de Janeiro in Brazil
and attracts 1.5 million people.
You have parades on different days with different topics.
You have the carnival princess with her show.
You have bands playing in Vallenato.
So if you go there for five days,
I assure you, you will need two week holidays afterwards.
So this is just a little exempt of all the festivals in Colombia.
If you're planning to travel to Colombia,
check the agenda of festivities,
because I'm sure there will be something for you.
Or if you're interested in something particular,
you always can write me or call me up or send me a bird with the message.

write them down.
We will respond.
And yeah, that's it.
Thanks for watching and goodbye from Bogota, Colombia.
See you soon.
