My name is Declan Colgan. I'm 20 years old and I'm a social care assistant in Mullingar in County Westmeath. I assist people with intellectual disability, whether it be adults or children, with their activities of daily living like getting them their breakfast, maybe bring them on a nice walk, and then obviously music therapy is a great one. It's a personal favourite of mine. When you're playing, you get them to raise their hands or clap and it's great exercise for people who are maybe sitting in wheelchairs and stuff. I love it too. I'm bringing both of my loves together, so it's great. The most rewarding part of the job would be, you know, when you see maybe a patient smile because you maybe did a dance move in front of them and it just brightens their day. Or you play music and you're playing the music that they love. For me anyway, it just brightens up my day that, you know, that I'm changing someone's life, just in the slightest way. Today I am here with my mum and dad. My mum, she's just the best. She's always looking out for stuff. You know, even for today, she brought sandwiches and tea and holy water in the car and stuff. She always looks out for me. And I think that's what kind of where I got caring for other people from like just kind of knowing how to be patient with people and especially the older people as well. Oh, my brother's always telling me, he's saying, oh, you're such a mammy's boy. And I was like, no, no, that's not me. But yeah, it is me. Okay, so you're gonna play the piano and sing? I am indeed. First of all, the fact that you're 20 and know who In Excess is, is amazing. Michael Hutchence, the lead singer of In Excess was a superstar. And he had something that you couldn't explain. And I think you have a special something that you can't explain as well, Declan. That was really, really good. Yeah, you're just a natural. I mean, your piano playing, the way you sold the song to us, your vocals were great. A really polished performance. I absolutely loved it. Well done. Have you done this kind of thing before? Just around my hometown, really. Just playing gigs in pubs and clubs. Like, you're a natural performer. I don't think you know how good you are. And your piano playing is really, really beautiful.
