Previously on Deanne and Phil, where our eyes are often bigger than our stomachs,
and we walk out of the local German bakery having bought a ton of sweets.
We tried about half of the items in our previous videos, so you can check that out if you're
interested. For those of you who don't know us, Phil is from Germany and I'm from the United
States. We love sharing, learning, and embracing cultural differences. And before we continue,
please like the video for the YouTube algorithm, grab a snack, and enjoy the sugar rush with us.
Here we go. We had a lot of items. I think, what was it? 27. We bought 27. 27. The total of this
was like 35 euros. Each item is like a euro or two. Babe, I just glanced over at this thing.
Is this a bear claw? Oh yeah. Is this why it's called a bear claw? That's a bear claw.
I always see America bear claw, but look at this. It looks like a claw. This looks a bit
disappointing from the inside. It's just a light, dry feeling dough with a little bit of sugar on
top. Bear claw. Wow, that's horrible. I think the dough is the problem. It's very hard. That's
not good. That's the worst thing we had so far. Moving on. Next. All right, let's try this. This
looks like one of those jelly cookies. Like a giant jelly cookie. Is that the oxenauge? The
ox eye? Maybe. I think these are pretty common too in the past as a kid. There might be marzipan
here on the outside. It looks a bit like it. Yeah, with some jelly. I don't know. It might be cherry.
More sticky. I like it. I could see myself getting that, depending on my mood. Yeah. That's a good
point. Depending on the mood, I think because it's a dense thing, right? It's heavy. This is one of
these things you get nauseated if you eat too much. Yeah, A-. That's good. For me, that's 6 out of 10.
All right, wow. I'm reaching a good limit here. What about this one? I don't know. She said she
didn't know what that was. She said nut thing. Yeah, check it. It looks like an oatmeal, nutty,
almond, bit of chocolate creation here on some dough. So those remind me of the granola bars
they claim is healthy, but it's still loaded with like 500 calories. Oh, it's hard like one. Oh no.
Wow, it just shattered all over the place. So it is a granola bar. German bakery granola bar.
We found it. That's chewy. That's something you should bring to a hike. Yeah. Why does this taste
healthier? Because we associate a granola bar with health. We've been conditioned to think it's
healthy, even though, I mean, I guess it's definitely healthier than these things. It's good.
Yeah, I love it. Yeah. There's like a nut mix in it. I'm a big fan of homemade granola bars or granola.
I think it's really good. That's one of the biggest surprises. 9 out of 10. Wow. Yeah. Dang, I didn't
think you would like that. Me neither. That's why. Just craving the nuts. He really likes nuts. Oh yeah.
All right, we're gonna do this thing. Is that the Schweineohr? A pig's ear? A pig ear? Oh maybe.
Yeah, elephant ear. Remember, isn't that from the French bakery items? It does look like that. Yeah, cute.
Let's just bite it. Come on, let's do it. That's something I just hated as a kid. I think that just
reminded me. Because the whole dough part is somehow glazed with something. Yeah, like sugar
butter. That's just the consistency. I like that texture a lot. I like that. I'm a fan of that.
I would give that like a 9. Yeah. You would give a 9? Yeah. Holy cow. Coming from the granola bar, I'm like,
for me, that thing is a 2 out of 10. I like it though, so I'll eat that. Okay, let's do this one. Get
the flaky stuff out of the way. So this looks like a cherry pillow or something. It's some
kind of pillow. There's some kind of red filling in it. Some berry, some cherry. Is that what it was?
Let me rip it open, make a mess here. There you go. Thank you for taking all of the cherries.
Well, let's switch then. That's a very pink cherry. It looks... You see the full cherries in there?
They are there and squished. This is the typical blätterteig. It's super fatty and sticks everywhere.
You should see my lap. We had one of these in the Aldi or the Lidl one too. This one definitely
tastes denser. Do you like it? Yeah, I think it's good. I like the cherry flavor. It's just a
change because we don't have a lot of cherry stuff normally. What is that? Chocolate? I think she
said it's filled. It looks like a croissant. I was like, I would like to have that chocolate
weird croissant and that's not a croissant. It's filled, she said. So let's see what it's
filled with. Nougat. Wow. Either more chocolate or some nutty thing. It's definitely chocolate. You see it.
Oh, it's both. Chocolate and vanilla. Oh, well, that might be a surprise too.
So it's definitely filled with some type of white cream and chocolate. I can't figure it out.
Yeah, it's good. It's good, right? It doesn't taste super fresh. This one's not my favorite. Yeah. Sorry.
I'll give this a 6 out of 10. All right, we got four more things and then we eat the whole loaf
of bread. So which one do you want to go next with? Stupid. I want the pretty strawberry thing. I keep
looking at that. Okay, can we do that now? Look at this beauty. So they had a ton of these little
like little cakes there and they look so nice. There's chocolate, there's a little grape on there.
So it's basically a little strawberry cake and German staple definitely is the strawberry cake.
I think it's super cute. Yeah, me too. To every German bakery you go, you will see something that
has these either full or half like big chunks of strawberries on top of it. And oftentimes it's
very good. We're coming into strawberry season right now. Yeah. And look at this. It's filled
with this cream. It is? Yeah, it's cream lined layer. Oh, this looks awesome. I got a little
grape inside. Wow, it's big. Let's do it. One bite challenge.
That's good. It's strawberry shortcake. It's like angel food cake, strawberry cream.
Dude, you know the standard German strawberry cakes with the bottom and then the jello. A lot
of people put whipped cream on it. This has a bit of whipped cream in it which gives us a nice
overall bite. You have it in every bite. Yeah. But I'm surprised by the dough. Yeah. I don't know
what you call it. Shortcake, whatever. Freaking awesome. It tastes fruity and sweet and cold.
Like a refreshing summer cake. Wow. I know what I'm getting for my birthday if I have it
on October. Okay. And for the next Monday too. But I thought it looked dry. I was not expecting much.
This is great. Nine and a half out of nine point eight. Stop with it. I'm not editing these weird
numbers. I give it a 10 out of 10. I think it's also a very nice contrast to the heavier sugar
stuff we've had right now. And it's perfect. It's like exactly what you need. Dude, that's so good.
And I don't really want to follow that strawberry thing with this thing. Another glazed poppy seed
roll. Mohnschnecke. Mohnschnecke. Mohnschnecke. Poppy seed snail. Just get it over with. You can't
follow the strawberry. I wish I had a little lemon. But I think poppy seed and lemon go well
together. It's not my favorite. I think I prefer the Mohnkuchen over the Mohnschnecke. Definitely
it's more moist. Personal preference. Yeah. All right, let's do the last sweet thing. Unicorn.
Chocolate cake. Oh yeah, what is it? What is it? Unicorn. No, that is Einhorn. Einhorn or a unicorn.
One horn. One horn. What is it? Cupcake, right? Yeah, these are so cute. I can't believe... Is it edible?
No. Wow, I get to keep it. It is, isn't it? That's not edible. It's white chocolate. That's edible?
Yeah. It really feels like a toy, like a coin. Plastic tag on it. I feel bad eating the unicorn.
It's another thing I noticed. Why does German Lee... German Lee. German Lee never has the chocolate
cake. Damn it, German Lee. Yeah, chocolate cake. They have the sugar cakes, the Schmandkuchen and all that
crap. But where's the good old chocolate cake? Like make a proper chocolate cake. I don't know, but
this looks like a... you would get at a kid's birthday party. And it tastes like it too. Does it? Yeah.
That's called a cupcake, right? Yeah. So cupcake is just not as good as a muffin.
No. I think we ordered something a child would normally order.
Like let's be honest, that's for a kid. Let's be honest, we do that almost every day.
It's true. Let us know. Muffin or cupcake. Which do you prefer? We got the sesame bread roll, which is
super common. We just wanted to show this. Poppy seed bread roll is very common.
Pumpkin seed bread roll sometimes. I like the pumpkin seed ones. But in the end, those are just the
standard white bread roll. Bakery bread rolls. I cut it with this chocolatey knife. Wow. It feels
good. I think this is a highly debated topic, the bread rolls. A lot of people say you have to get
the bread rolls from the bakery. And with all due respect, I disagree. I think the frozen bread rolls
are one of the best bread rolls you can get. Because once you bake them, they're super fresh.
If you get this from the bakery right out of the oven, it's probably better. But you barely ever
get it right out of the oven. It's never gonna be there on the same time. Exactly. So if this is a little
older, it's usually not as amazing. I feel like with bread and bread rolls, the moment it comes out,
it just goes down pretty quickly. That's how I feel about pretzels. This has a good feeling to
it, though I have to admit. Like a nice density. Yeah, that's exactly how a bread roll should be.
Crisp and fluffy on the inside. This was the perfect bread roll four hours ago. When it first came out.
Yeah. But let me know what you think. Do you only go to the bakeries? Or are the frozen ones okay?
Or the discounted ones? Whatever. And then my love and hate relationship with this gray bread. We just
call it graubrot. Look at it. This is all I had growing up. This is the kind of bread my parents
got. We never had like the nice seed dark breads or every now and then just toasted bread like the
white bread. This, this, this, this. All my childhood is this. And this is not my favorite. I never buy it
anymore. When it's very fresh, it's freaking good though, right? He just loves to hate on it. I think
that's your, your agenda. You just like to hate on, on this gray bread. And sparkling water. What did
this gray bread ever do to you? It fed me. It fed me? How horrible is that? For the first 18 years of my life
I only had this bread and water. Grew up in prison. Prison. That's what they teach you on Duolingo.
Here it is. Get it in there. It's actually not that bad. I think it's pretty good. Yeah. It's nice.
We heat it up. We toast it a little bit. Toast it. Toast every bread. I like the sponginess of the
inside. Yeah. 10 out of 10. You're so stupid. We tried almost every item at a local German bakery
and I'm full. That bakery is one of a kind. Like it's not a chain. It's not a whatever discounter.
So is this what you guys pictured as a real authentic German bakery experience? Of course
they're changing with the time. They have a lot of modern-ish items too. I think the big thing about
German bakeries is it changes every month if not every day. There's usually different items on
there. You'll have the staples but some of the other things just depends on what they bake. I
think that's part of the beauty with it. Yeah. So let us know which one do you prefer. The real
bakeries. The discount bakeries. And let us know which one is your favorite bakery item. Also what
should we try next? As always thank you so much for watching. We'll see you next time. Bye.
