Italy is wonderful

Walnuts, one of the best breads I've ever had.
It's so good for summer. I just took a bite of the pesto, it's so good.
When you're in Rome, make yourself a souplé.
Today we're filming one of my absolute favorite type of videos here in Rome,
which is a food tour. We are kicking off our food tour in the neighborhood of Monti,
which is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Rome and is known for its restaurants and bars.
It's very lively and it has a mixture of both locals and tourists.
Okay, so to start the day off right, we've got to get coffee
and a cornetto and we're getting these at Er Barretto, which is right here in Monti.
A load of peanuts.
Very nutty, delicious.
What a perfect espresso bar, exactly what it should be.
Very local.
Very local, very nice stuff, even though they kind of only spoke Italian, we managed to get by.
That's the beauty of it.
Yeah.
We had a coffee each, Laura had the cappuccino, we had a cornetto, we had a canolo,
which was very different to the Sicilian canolo.
The whole shell was made out of peanuts with pistachio cream inside, so it was very rich
and filling, so I don't think I could probably have more than one or two of those in one go
because they're actually, don't look at me like that, don't you dare.
Okay, I definitely could, but I probably shouldn't.
Is that okay?
Yeah, that's more accurate.
Okay, so get this, like normally these espresso bars, they're very well priced,
so usually coffee in Italy is not going to cost you too much.
So we had Laura's cappuccino, my espresso, we had the cornetto,
we had the canolo and a bottle of water and the whole thing was only nine euros.
Now we're going to go pick up a few items so we can do a picnic nearby the Colosseum.
We're planning on buying pizza, panini.
Yeah, a sandwich, yeah, panini.
And some artisanal chocolate.
Yeah, we're going to a raw vegan place that makes only like cakes and sweet stuff.
We just want to give it a go to have a vegan option for those that want something sweet.
So far, Monti is the area with the most plants on buildings I've seen.
It's very plant-based.
And less traffic, you can actually walk around without mining any cars.
Yeah, look how much ivy in this area, I don't know why exactly.
Very airy.
The quickest pizza transaction of my life.
They're all quite busy and brash, I would say,
but equally we got what we wanted and we're super excited to have it.
Okay, so we got all the goods and we are now on our way to our picnic spot,
which we decided to have in the closest park geographically to the Colosseum.
Okay, we found a tiny place here in the shade.
Awesome spot.
We're all alone and look at our view.
Alara, let me just turn around.
Look at this view.
How about that?
We were just a second ago where we bought the pizza and the sandwich.
To this point here, it was about a 10-minute walk perhaps, so super quick, super close.
What an amazing spot for a picnic.
Yeah, and also very unplanned.
Yeah.
Just wanted to look for a park and a bench.
Awesome, I'm loving this.
All right, shall we dive in?
Yes.
What goodies do we have there?
Well, because everything was very rushed, I assume it's pizza with mortadella.
This is the freshest one they had.
Yes, they just got this from the oven.
Very good.
It's not heavy at all.
Alara, is this the most cliche Italian thing, having pizza on the side of the Colosseum?
No one else is doing it right now, so I don't know.
Before I finish off the pizza slice, I want to try the sandwich.
It's really nice.
They have gorgonzola, prosciutto, and walnuts.
Perfect combo.
The bread is hot.
Perfect.
Super crunchy.
Crunchy, but also melts in your mouth, no?
This bread.
One of the best breads I've ever had.
I mean, I read about these sandwiches, that they're great and different.
They're awesome.
Again, not too heavy, simple.
So nice.
Three, four ingredients.
So nice.
And really affordable.
They had sandwiches between five and eight euros.
They're quite big.
It's really hot today, but somehow the sun isn't always out.
And it's just really muggy.
And I just feel moist.
I hate the word.
I said it.
I'm sorry.
I feel moist.
Like my arms are moist.
Are your arms moist?
I'm eating, man.
Can I have some more?
Sure.
As far as this place goes for a picnic, unbelievable.
I'm still shocked there's not more people here.
And look at this view.
There's loads of people doing the tour now in the Colosseum.
You can see that.
Time for the treat?
Melted.
Let me see.
I wish I'd seen that coming.
It's like a vegan cake.
It is a vegan cake, basically.
It has coconut cream, filling, chocolate, and also some cookie crumble.
In theory, it sounds really good.
It's like bounty.
Okay.
But a hundred times better.
What?
Wait, I still have one bite of the pizza.
Wait, so I got two tiny chocolate truffles.
That one's with pistachio.
And this one was chili, ginger, and cinnamon.
I like it because I like dark chocolate.
But does it taste like ginger and cinnamon?
Probably not.
Is it worth three euro for this tiny thing?
If you're a vegan, probably.
Let's see this one.
This is a pistachio one.
Sausage dog.
If you like dark chocolate, this is incredible.
If you don't, then probably you shouldn't get this.
You should get the cake that Laura got.
I think we're kind of done with our little picnic situation.
What is next?
Next is ice cream, which I won't have.
I'll just have a tiny bite out of yours.
The heat today.
We've got to drink a bit more water.
The cool thing about Rome is, there's so many fountains everywhere.
But exactly now when we need one, we can't find one.
Smile.
Una coppetta piccola con due gusti?
Sì.
Limone e basilico?
Sì.
Nocciola o pistachio?
Nocciola.
Gelateria dell'Angeletto.
Got a nocciola one, which is hazelnut, hazelnut cream.
And this is something that I never would have, never have I ordered before.
It's lemon with basil.
Basil?
So let's go with the one that I know for sure I'm going to love.
I asked which one is better, the pistachio or this one, and he said this one.
So I mean, it's exactly like a cold Nutella.
Perfect for a hot summer's day.
Exactly.
Now the underdog, the wild card, it's like a mojito.
I know you don't like lemon stuff, but you're going to love this one.
I like mojito.
Yeah, I'll try the mojito.
By the way, you have a very yawning pitbull behind you.
It's like a cocktail, isn't it?
It's a bit sweeter than a cocktail.
It's super, super good.
Very refreshing.
A bit too sweet.
But it's good.
I mean, it's ice cream.
It's so good for summer.
Okay, on to our last stop here in Monti.
Oh, beer has never tasted so good.
So after a long day of walking around in the heat and eating,
we finally found a spot with a bit of shade and we got ourselves a drink to cool down.
There's a small breeze going on as well from time to time.
So yeah, we cooled down a bit.
This bar looked far more populated and full of life.
I think later in the day from what I saw online.
But now it's still a bit, you know, it's still super sunny
and some of the tables are out in the sun.
So yeah, we had 37 degrees right now.
So of course there aren't a lot of people drinking.
That's pretty much it for what we had in mind here in Monti.
We went home to cool down for an hour and then we start with round two.
Round two is in our neighborhood.
We've been spending most of our time lately in Trastevere.
That was a super refreshing couple of hours at home.
We are back in Trastevere and we are going to the best craft beer place in the area.
It's called Ma che siete venuti a fa?
And it kind of means, but what did you come for?
Like, what are you doing here?
Ariana, what are you doing here?
Something like that.
Ma che siete venuti a fa?
Okay, so that's three minutes from our home.
Let's go grab a beer.
Last time we passed this place was packed with people.
So I asked for a fruitier one, which is that one.
I thought, oh, that's perfect for you.
You'll love it.
And then I said, okay, can I have a second one?
That's a bit stronger, which is that one.
So now I'm having the fruity one.
But actually I kind of like both anyway.
So overall price is a bit higher than usual.
They're like 15 euros for the two beers.
This bar was recognized as being one of the best craft beer bars in Europe.
And they've got about 16 to 20 different beers on tap.
But this is definitely a spot that you don't want to miss if you're in Trastevere
because it has some of the best beers in Italy.
Okay, pre-dinner lunch brunch is served.
I heard a crunch.
Very crunchy.
So that's a vegetarian one.
Very good.
I think it's mozzarella, pesto and zucchini.
I just took a bite of the pesto.
It's so good.
Nice.
And this other one, this is the freshest one they had with salsiccia and potato.
It keeps becoming better and better.
It's better and better?
Yeah.
For vegetarians, it's awesome.
So you had vegan treats and vegetarian pizza.
I'm very happy with it.
So we're trying the fresh one with salsiccia and potato, sausage and potato.
Very good.
Honestly, I have to say, like you said, the base, the crust, incredible.
So really tasty.
The price isn't that much.
It's like six, seven euro for this whole thing.
And light, simple flavors.
Yeah.
It's not overly complicated, like two, three toppings maximum.
Really nice place and the base is consistently the same.
Also, one thing sometimes we struggle with,
we finish a pizza and then we just feel sluggish forever.
Yeah, heavy.
Well, this one, they said that they knead it and then they leave it to rest for 24 hours.
It's just delicious and it's a bit lighter than anything else.
So 100% Pizzeria alla Boccaccia in Trastevere.
One of the typical traditional Italian street food dishes is the arancino.
The big round rice ball that's deep fried.
Now, that's Sicilian and Rome has its own version of it called supli.
And it's essentially a smaller rice ball that's deep fried.
And inside you have a mix of rice with tomato sauce
and a bit of mozzarella that kind of gets melted as you're deep frying it.
This usually you get it for like one or two euro
as you're walking down the street for like a little snack for merenda.
Now, merenda is the little snack that you have in between lunch and dinner,
just to keep you going for dinner.
And down the street, we got another place called Supli Roma.
Bigger selection than the other place we went to the other day.
You can choose a classico, which is just the tomato with mozzarella.
You can choose with the cacio e pepe filling or with amatriciana or carbonara.
And I chose the amatriciana one.
So it's essentially like a bit spicier tomato sauce with some
conciaga, with some bacon inside.
A lot of Italians inside.
Yeah.
Must be good.
It's definitely a destination for people who do street food tours around Placevera.
As you saw, there were quite a few larger groups of people.
And that's usually how it works.
I didn't miss a beat.
Very good.
So when you're in Rome, make yourself a supli.
Okay, so we had a little bit of time to kill before dinner.
So we stopped for an aperitivo.
It's really, really, really nice outside.
Now it's getting to be a bit cooler.
Sun is not shining that hard anymore.
But there's so many people out on the terraces.
It's really hard to find a spot.
Between cacio e pepe and carbonara, which one are you claiming tonight?
Carbonara always.
Really?
Damn it.
You wanted the carbonara.
I did.
I've never had really, really good cacio e pepe.
Exactly.
That's why you have to have it.
No.
We're gonna wrap up our little aperitivo situation here.
And we gotta head out to dinner, which is really far away.
It's almost four minutes away.
I almost had the shock.
I was like, no more walking.
So I just got a phone call.
It was some carbonara.
It had your name on it.
Andiamo.
So what did we think about dinner?
The pasta was homemade.
It was very good.
It was very authentic.
It didn't have a lot of sauce, which I liked.
It wasn't very heavy.
Yours was very good.
You had something off the menu with shrimp, pecorino, and lime.
And it was very good.
And I had almost all of it.
It was so full of flavor.
I loved it.
And I had the carbonara, which you kind of ate most of it because we traded.
It was very good.
The guanciale was super, super good.
Obviously, both dishes were very good.
But I think the best thing about it was the actual texture of the pasta somehow.
Don't miss Mr. Clude if you're coming to Trastevere.
100% worth it.
Really nice place.
Really small.
It only sits 16 people at its most.
So I would probably recommend booking the place.
We did as well.
And it was definitely worth it.
The owner, she's really nice.
And she takes care of everything.
She pours the wine.
She brings the dishes.
It's just, yeah, you can tell they do it with love.
Yeah.
And a lot of Italians.
I mean, other than us, there was only one other table of foreigners.
So I think that's a really good sign.
We had, and by we, I mean they had so much food today.
Not that I'm complaining.
I love food.
You seem to be complaining.
Especially food in Italy and especially in Rome.
It's absolutely incredible.
