On 27 March 2023, the Swiss Polar Institute organised a workshop on the issue of impact of scientific fieldwork in the polar regions. The discussion engaged with environmental and carbon footprints of fieldwork and explored avenues for generating positive impact and cleaner approaches for data acquisition.
0:10 – *Introduction and welcome*
Danièle Rod, Swiss Polar Institute
5:00 – *Environmental impact of polar science: overview and global perspective*
Susana Hancock, President for APECS international, Arctic Basecamp
Susana is a multidisciplinary Arctic climate researcher who addresses the socio-geopolitical impacts of the climate crisis in the polar regions.
17:00 – *Minimising the environmental impact of polar research and logistics*
Pjotr Elshout, European Polar Board, The Hague, Netherlands
Pjotr is the project officer at the European Polar Board and has actively worked on the latest “Synthesis Report on Reducing Environmental Impacts of Polar Research” (https://t.co/bnh1RBw9oS)
28:30 – *Tackling environmental impact of fieldwork – a comparative perspective between Alps, Arctic and Antarctic*
Michael Lehning, WSL, EPFL, Switzerland
Michael is professor of atmospheric physics and snow and atmosphere processes, focusing on the interaction between the atmosphere and the cryosphere as well as renewable energy in the Alps.
43:20 – *Taking into account the environmental footprint of scientific stations at the French Polar Institute*
