Joseph Lister contribution to microbiology

In this video we are going to discuss about the scientist Joseph Lister who is known as the father of modern surgery. So here in this video we are going to discuss about his contributions to modern surgery as well as in microbiology okay. So let's discuss about his contributions. So Joseph Lister is the first person who started the antiseptic surgery. Antiseptic surgery means using antiseptics to clean the room of operation theater by spraying the antiseptics and also he used to clean the wounds of humans okay. So by this he started the antiseptic surgery and give the idea of sterile surgery. So for his contribution in antisepsis the Listerine mouthwash is named after him. Lister and Lister successfully introduced carbolic acid the first antiseptic use the carbolic acid to sterilize the surgical instruments and also to clean wounds. So he used antiseptics or he used carbolic acid as a antiseptic for two reasons. First thing to sterilize the surgical instruments which are used in operating theater operation theater and the next reason is to clean the wounds of humans okay and he also developed a method of repairing knee caps with metal wire. So next is the discovery of antiseptic by Joseph Lister. So Lister became aware of the study or the work of Louis Pasteur who showed that the rotting and fermentation could occur by microorganisms. So Lister thought that the perhaps microorganisms were causing the rotting wounds. So he followed the study of Louis Pasteur and also Louis Pasteur suggested three methods to eliminate the microorganisms that are that methods are filtration, exposure to heat and exposure to chemical solutions. So he suggested three methods to eliminate the microorganisms but the first two the first two methods are not appropriate that are the inappropriate to use in human wounds. So Joseph Lister used THARD that is the chemical solution to use for the to treat the human wounds okay. So now let's discuss about the antiseptic which is used by Joseph Lister that is the carbolic acid. So previously carbolic acid was used to treat sewage and also used to fight the parasites and reduce the odors during cholera and cattle plague. So Lister tried to weaker version of carbolic acid on wounds. So therefore he tested the results of spraying instruments, surgical incisions and dressing with the solution of carbolic acid. So he used the carbolic acid as a antiseptic to spray the instruments or equipments which are present in the operation theater and also he used carbolic acid to treat the wounds, human wounds okay. And he saw that the incidence of infection or gangrene is reduced by this treatment, carbolic acid treatment okay. So in this way he led to the rise of sterile surgery. So what is the first antiseptic treatment? So he started the first antiseptic treatment. So Lister operated on an 11 year old boy who had suffered a compound fracture. The wound was cleaned with the carbolic acid and covered with the dressing soaked in acid. At regular intervals the wounds were was cleaned and dressed and within six weeks the wounds were completely healed. So the only effect only a side effect was burnt skin from using the acid solution. So in this way Joseph Lister first time used the antiseptic treatment. So the next thing is the carbolic acid spray. So he started spraying the carbolic acid by using a machine or equipment that is this machine. So Lister continued to refine and improve his methods and he developed the carbolic acid spray to use the operating theater. So this is the here the carbolic acid present and by this by this portion the carbolic acid is sprayed to the whole room by pumping this machine. So this is the small this is a simple machine to spray the carbolic acid into the operation theater. Okay so it is developed by Joseph Lister but after all the use of carbolic acid spray irritates eye and respiratory tracts and soaked bandages were suspected to damaging tissue. So it is further in the next the carbolic acid not used as a antiseptic because it is somehow harmful to human or human wounds. Okay so that's why the alternative for the alternative of this carbolic acid is used for the next time but the Joseph Lister first time introduced or give the idea or started the antiseptic process or antiseptic surgery.
