Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant and traveler, famous for his travels to East Asia narrated in The Travels of Marco Polo, story unveiled in Medieval Europe the lands of Central Asia and China. Marco was born and learned to trade as his father and uncle, Niccolò and Maffeo, traveled through Asia and apparently met Kublai Khan. In 1269 both returned to Venice and first saw Marco. The three of them embarked on an epic journey to Asia, which visited Armenia, Persia and Afghanistan to China, traveling across the Silk Road. On the return journey they passed through the Strait of Hormuz since arriving in Venice in 1295 after a journey of 24 years in which they had traveled more than 24,000 km and returning laden with riches.
