Three days ago I set out to race in one of the most extreme mountain bike races in the world,
the Trans Madeira. A five-day epic bike race across the tiny tropical island located way
out in the Atlantic Ocean. Up until today we'd had some super tight racing as well
as some unforeseen mechanical issues. Oh no, I've got a flat tyre. I've put a dent in the rim.
All that aside, I was sitting in fourth place overall going into today's race,
but what was in store was set out to be one of the toughest days yet.
A long way up. Maybe too long.
We had no idea what was about to unfold.
It was going to be extremely challenging with some of the best trails of the race so far.
It's quarter to six in the morning. Trans Madeira, day three.
People just look arsey. I know I do as well. I look retard, but we are.
Not much sleep. Got up early. It's still dark outside. Gonna leave soon. Try to eat bread.
We are at the top of stage 15. Stage one of day three.
Ride that. That was tough.
I thought I was going to be way longer and I was just easing my pace a little bit.
Ride that. Ride that.
Imagine. There's the hands.
Ow. Ride that.
Break, break.
Whoa. Punches everywhere.
We are hiking up a monster mountain to the next stage.
Two hours up. One thousand, two hundred meters elevation.
It's tiring and it's hot. And it's exposed. It's dangerous.
A long way up. Yeah, definitely. Maybe too long.
Still gotta go up that though.
Hands and they're not finished yet.
So we've now got a short transition underneath this huge cliff
to a feed station before we go down the next stop.
Whoa, tight.
Big levadas these, ain't they?
Literally don't trust myself riding along here.
Oh my God, it gets skinnier.
Into the tunnel.
Oh God.
I am not riding this.
That. Oh my God, it's so narrow.
Now we're on the other side of the island, it seems.
I literally hate that.
I don't even know where we are.
Hopefully near a stage.
You can see how up there, the waterfall.
That's enough tunnels for one day for me.
F**k that.
I hate tunnels.
I clobbered my head off the waterfalls.
What can we expect on this one?
Fun.
Pure fun.
Pure Madeira fun.
I'll take your word for it.
I'm actually pretty tired, so I'm just going to enjoy it, right?
Is that cool?
Yeah.
Goal of your dreams.
Is this on now?
Yeah, it's recording.
All right.
That will look f**king so good.
I hit some sections quick.
For blind stuff, yeah.
Yeah.
Holy f**k.
Yeah, I don't know where I'm going.
Yeah.
It's a bit more technical than the other one.
Instead of those big berms, we have leaves.
Be careful with those.
Is it flashing red, this thing?
Yeah.
Oh yeah, you're recording.
You're flashing red as well.
Let me just close my pocket and get clipped in.
Yeah, remember to unlock suspension because you are climbing.
Hell yeah.
Go get it.
Have fun.
All right, you good?
Let's go.
Enjoy.
Good luck.
It is slippery.
I'm on fire.
That was like unparalleled how good the last one was.
Kind of speechless.
I'm so tired.
I had to actually chill out to get better exits.
That was a hard run.
It was good for a blind one.
Yeah.
I think that's what you've got to keep telling yourself.
No idea what's coming.
But I didn't have to use as much energy there.
You see how some of the shit turns.
Got a few little gaps.
Got some nice pumps.
Yeah, it was good.
It was all right.
You rode good.
It's good.
What a day in Madeira.
Day three, Trans Madeira.
I've had two beers and two ponchos and feel very lightheaded.
I'm going to go and eat loads of food, ready for day four.
Oh, campsite.
My tent is ready.
Campsite for tonight.
Bikes in with the mechanics.
Ready for day four.
I am going to go and get a beer, a burger.
We'll see you in the next day of Trans Madeira.
