Learn what it means to move down the concentration gradient. Passive transport involves moving from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. Some examples include diffusion and osmosis.
Welcome to MooMooMath and Science and a Concentration Gradient, Diffusion, and Osmosis.
Have you ever wondered how a teabag turns a whole mug of water brown?
Or how a single spray of perfume can fill an entire room with its scent?
It's all thanks to something called a concentration gradient.
Imagine you're in a room and everyone is standing in one corner.
If given the opportunity, people will naturally move from where there are lots of people to
where there are fewer people.
That's basically what a concentration gradient is all about.
Things tend to move from where there's lots of them to where there's not so many.
In this teacup, we have high concentration of tea molecules inside the bag and a low
concentration outside.
This difference creates a concentration gradient and guess what?
Those tea molecules want to spread out.
This movement from high concentration to low concentration is called diffusion.
It's like those people moving from the crowded section of the room to the less crowded area.
The tea molecules diffuse out of the bag until they're spread out evenly in the water.
Now let's talk about a special kind of diffusion called osmosis.
Osmosis is like diffusion, but it's specifically about how water moves.
Water moves across a special barrier called a semi-permeable membrane.
Think of it like a gate that only lets certain things move through.
Let's look at an example of osmosis.
In this case, water is moving from where there's lots of it outside the gummy bear to where
there is less of it inside the gummy bear.
That's why the gummy bear gets bigger.
It's absorbing water.
Moving down the concentration gradient, in other words, moving from high concentration
to low concentration, is considered passive transport of material.
It requires a minimum amount of energy.
Think of passive transport as riding a bike down a hill.
It requires little energy, and you just go with the flow of the downhill.
So there you have it.
Concentration gradient, diffusion, and osmosis.
