Shrink down and take a look because we've got 5 crazy cool epic awesome funny weird
wild unexpected true facts about ants.
Number 5.
Ants can carry objects up to 50 times their body weight.
Ants might be small but they definitely put what they've got to good use.
For their size, ant muscles are thicker than those of larger animals which allows them
to produce more force and carry much bigger objects.
To put that in human terms, if we had muscles as strong as ants we'd be able to lift a car
with no problem.
Hey pass it over here.
Number 4.
Soldier ants.
In certain species of ants, the soldier ants have specifically designed heads that are
shaped to match the entrance to the colony.
They fortify the nest by sitting just inside the entrance with their head facing out.
They even have their own secret codes to get inside.
When a worker ant returns back to the colony, it touches the soldier's head letting them
know that they're a part of the colony.
Secret ant codes huh?
I wonder what the password is.
Password?
Really guys?
Come on.
Number 3.
Ants are geeks.
Like they're really smart.
In fact, ants are the animal with the largest brain in proportion to its size in the entire
animal kingdom and are considered the smartest insects.
They are highly organized animals capable of accomplishing large tasks in coordinated
groups referred to as superorganisms.
Every one of the millions of ants in a colony has a specific task they accomplish, working
together with each other and even coordinating with other colonies.
Guys, all ants are asking us to do is give peace a chance.
Number 2.
Ants were the original farmers.
That's right, ants began farming around 50 million years before people started raising
their own crops.
And not only were ants ahead of the curve, but they were also using sophisticated techniques
to get better yields.
The ants would secrete antibiotic chemicals to help mold grow and use manure for fertilization.
But no matter how impressive that is, they still never made an ant tractor.
Just saying, that would be really cool.
And finally, our number 1 fact about ants, they live in super colonies.
Some ants form massive communities that can go on for thousands of miles.
That's right, Argentine ants build enormous super colonies of ants all over the world.
These super colonies are made up of thousands of smaller nests and potentially billions
of ants that work together peacefully.
Each colony has a unique chemical makeup that lets members recognize each other and alerts
the colony of any danger.
And if that wasn't crazy enough, scientists have discovered that super colonies in Europe,
North America, and Japan all have this same chemical makeup, which means they're essentially
a global super colony of ants.
These ants can be found on every continent on Earth besides Antarctica and make up more
of Earth's biomass than humans do.
