On this channel I specialise in making really complex looking images easy to create so just
follow along with my step-by-step tutorial of this painting and you will amaze yourself.
Now as always I'm using the app Procreate on the iPad but you can probably apply the
processing techniques that I'm going to show you onto whatever tablet or app that you happen to
use. Within Procreate I have opened an A4 canvas which is 297 by 210 millimetres at 300 dpi and
if you're going to follow along with the exact colours then I've created a colour palette for
you to use. Each of these colours has what we call a hexadecimal code which if you go to the value
section within the colours you'll find the area you can type in each of the codes that are down
in the video description, press enter, the colour appears up here and you can just tap them together
one colour at a time to create the palette or alternatively there is a link next to the codes
that takes you to my Patreon page and you can download the whole colour file for free to save
yourself some time. In terms of the brushes I'm going to be using within airbrushing the soft
brush, the medium brush, I'm also going to be using within artistic the leatherwood brush and I'm going
to be using within organic the rainforest brush. If you enjoy this kind of tutorial please make sure
to give this video a thumbs up, hit the subscribe and also the bell notification to make sure that
you get notified of all my future tutorials as well as this one. With that said and done let's
get started. So on our first layer, layer one, I'm going to go to my first colour in the top row,
I'm going to drag it in so it fulfills the entire canvas. I'm going to stay on layer one, we don't
need to create a new layer just yet. I'm going to go to my colours, I'm going to choose the second
colour this time, just a little bit different, a bit warmer. Go to the colour disc, you can see
that there, the first colour was very much a kind of green but grey, this time it's more of an orange
but grey. Go to our brushes, airbrushing, soft brush, we'll put it at about 15% size and 100% opacity
and somewhere around here, I'm going to draw a line all the way across, it doesn't need to be
straight line particularly because we're going to go to the adjustments, gaussian blur and blur it
in to about the 40% like that. Then we're going to create a new layer, layer two, go to our third
colour in on the top row, stay on the soft brush, still at 15% size and 100% opacity
and just slightly underneath where we did the last stripe, we're going to create another one.
Again, adjustments, gaussian blur, blur it in, this time to about the 30%. Create a new layer,
layer three, go to our colours, choose this colour now which you can see is a much more vibrant
orange compared to the others. We're going to have an even more vibrant orange influence but
this is pretty vibrant, stay on the soft brush but we are going to turn it down just a little bit
to about 12%, stay on 100% opacity and just at the bottom section there, we're going to do
another stripe and you can see that this is about halfway now. Go to the adjustments, gaussian blur
and blur it in again to the 40% like that. So on top of that, we're going to create another layer,
we're going to go to our colours, go to the fifth colour, stay on the soft brush,
we're going to put the size of the brush to about 7%, 100% opacity still and again,
we're going to go for roughly about halfway, it doesn't matter if it's not a straight line
particularly. We're going to go to the adjustments, gaussian blur and blur it in again, this time
to about the 25%. Works, create a new layer, go back to our colours, go to the sixth colour now,
so much more yellow but again within the grey so it appears more green.
We'll put it slightly back up again, about 12% and just below that stripe, we'll do a stripe of this,
adjustments, gaussian blur, blur it in to about 30%, create a new layer, go to our colours
and we're going to go for the seventh colour now which is the end of this section and we may also
keep the brush at 12%, 100% opacity but we're just going to fill in this bottom section
and we'll just try and get rid of that hint of blue that appears there just ever so slightly,
then we can go to the adjustments, gaussian blur and blur it in once more to about the 20% should
do. We're going to create a new layer, go back to our colours and we have two colours here,
I'll show you where they are, so they're still orange colours but they're very much greyed out.
We're going to go to the one on the very end which is slightly darker,
we're going to go to the organic section of brushes and the rainforest brush
and we're going to put it at about 5% size and about 50% strength opacity and I'm going to start
piecing in some sections up here and then start bringing them down and we can just start creating
some cloud sections and textures. So maybe what we should do really is cut across,
leave a slight gap and we'll go back in and we'll carefully fill that in.
I'm just creating some textures as we cut across to begin with, then I'm going to reduce the size
of that to 3% and I'm going to create some interesting shapes and break away parts of
the cloud. I want it really to culminate in the centre area, I'm really wanting to
show you the techniques rather than really worrying about composition too much.
So we just have some clumps, I'm just doing some tapping motions,
create some interesting lumps and bumps within the cloud
like this. We can easily go back in with the eraser too,
first of all I'm just going to fill in some shapes like so and I'm going to turn the opacity down
to about 30% and I'm just going to carefully blend away some of that orange and I just want
to do enough so the orange pretty much fades away. I don't really want to extend it too much further
than that, not for now. Now you can see a lot of that orange is not that visible anymore but that's
and we're going to go into the clouds with an eraser next, just reclaim a little bit of it
and that will work. So if we go to the eraser without pressing it to begin with,
if you tap on it and then go again you're going to be using the eraser at whatever setting that
it defaults to or what you were using last time. So go back onto the brush and remember we're using
a rainforest brush, if you long tap on the eraser then tap on it again you can see the eraser now
is on the rainforest brush too. So I'm going to put the size of the brush for the eraser at 2%
and we'll have it about 60% opacity so strength and we can just remove sections. Now with the
same types of texture that we were applying shapes and we can remove sections so it has
a consistency and it doesn't feel like you're doing lots of different kinds of textures.
So we can remove some bits, thin them out however that works for you.
This is a world that you're in controller so you can create whatever shapes that you think
are the most interesting. I'm going to create a couple of gaps in our clouds, I'm going to do the
sun in and around here so I might just create a little bit of a gap here but not too much because
I can do that with another effect in a few moments anyway and I might flip back to the brush again
and keep adding shapes as well as removing. Maybe a couple of breakaway sections, not too many,
just one or two. I might just blend that in a bit more so it softens out at the edges in fact.
I might just do another section here, like so. Back in with the eraser just to sharpen up any
edges, not to undo what I've just done but just to sharpen it up a little bit. In fact
I could also turn it down so it's very much almost at the 1% and the lowest part of 2%
on the eraser and that just allows me to get in there and really refine some of those edges
so they're exactly how I want them to be. Okay back to my brush again, maybe I'll just
erase this a little bit on the edge there. Play around with that, whatever works for you. Okay
I'm going to create another layer but importantly I'm going to move it so it's underneath layer 7.
Go back to my colours and I'm going to use this colour on the second row that's on the end and
you can see it is very much an orange yellow colour but it is a very pastel version of that.
I'm going to stay on the rainforest brush, I'm going to make sure it's pretty low,
the lowest part of 2% and 30% opacity should do and it's a layer underneath what we've just done
so it means that it's not going to go on top very easily so you can't see it when you go over it,
maybe just a hint of it but what it's really useful for is going around the edges of the
shapes we've created. Obviously we're going to have the sun in the far distance, very far distance
in this section and it's illuminating the rear side of the cloud so along this edge you're just
going to get like a halo effect just lining around the edge with this brighter colour.
So I'm just liberally going to start adding it all the way around the edge pretty much to begin
with and if you do too much of it it's not difficult to dial it back but initially just
get it in there you should pretty quickly start to see if you've done too much of it.
We're going to have it merging with the sun and creating a warmer kind of effect
but for this section certainly we're going to have a much more pastel version of it.
We can do a couple of breakaway tufts as well just to add a bit more interest into our sky
and let's add some around here like so. A little bit less in this region because I know I'm going
to go back in with a different effect anyway but we may as well do a little bit of it.
So I'm just pressing a bit more lightly making it a little bit more broken but we're still
getting the general effect. Don't need to worry too much about this because we're going to really
go in there in a moment with a stronger effect but just a hint of it. I really wanted to just
concentrate around here I think and actually there's another tuft there that I'm really going
to bring out as well. A couple of their own will look really effective. We're going to create a new
layer but importantly I'm going to go up to layer 7 before I click the plus symbol. Okay so now it's
on top of everything. I'm going to go to the little n on that layer, tap on it and that is the blend
mode which is set to normal by default but I'm going to put it down to the add and you'll notice
that it's changed from an n to an a. I'm going to go to my colors and I've got these really super
vibrant colors that I'm going to be using. I'm going to go to the orange which is really intense
and if I wasn't using this layer as a different blend mode it would look too strong but the way
I'm going to use it you'll see it looks quite good. I'm going to change from the rainforest
brush to the airbrushing soft brush again. I'm going to put it down to 2 size and about
well really quite low actually it's about 15 opacity strength and we can just work around
some of these edges again. Now this is on top so you can go over the top of everything with this
so you need to be a little bit more careful maybe even down to the 1%. Zoom in just a touch not a
lot and I'm just going to go in and around some of these shapes with this color to begin with.
I'm just going to really have a powerful impact and you can just go around the edges with this
now it's a really vibrant effect really quite potent and again we're going to do the sun in
the center area so we can really make sure we have a dramatic edge in around here that will
work for us and there's going to be a gap here where the sun actually pokes through so let's just
go around the edges of all of this gap that will look good like this and some more around here as
we've also got a nice yellow color that we can use in addition as it goes from the orange a little
bit further out before we get to the pastel yellow we're going to have this strong vibrant
yellow as well so we can kind of mix the two together. Okay I'm going to create a new layer
and I'm going to go to the end symbol again and again put it on the add I'm going to be using the
soft brush still I'm going to put it at around 10 size and 15 opacity I'm just going to tap it
where I want the sun to be a couple of times then I'm going to put it up to 20 size again
tap it a couple of times maybe another time for good measure go to the orange
tap that a couple of times maybe four or five times and you can really start to see a glow
coming through already I'm going to turn that same brush down to the two percent and I'm just
going to start filling in that gap to begin with and just blending out some of those edges too
we've got a sharp edge that we've created and that's great I'm just going to soften them in a
little bit so I'm lightly tapping I'm just blending away the harshness of that edge so
it softens in a little bit and I can also just do a hint of that up here as well and so I can add
just a little bit in and around these areas and actually coloring in a little bit and then just
release the pressure so it fades up near the top I can just go over that a few times it's not going
to destroy any of the yellow that's underneath it this is the best thing about this blend mode
is it isn't destructive then let's stay on the same layer go to the white reduce it down even
further the lowest part of two percent we're still on 15 opacity and that's okay we can do
this gradually I'm just going to build in now a really vibrant white for where the sun is going
to be and I don't think we should stop as a circle either we'll we'll kind of just blend this in to
the yellow orange make it look a bit strange if it's an exact circle so we'll just allow this to
fade away in blotches and sections like that so it's the whole section now that is really
strongly illuminated again we can switch back to our orange color perhaps and we've still got quite
intense and you could just do a couple of extra anomalies and breakaway sections if we wanted
like this I'm going to go back through my layers so layer eight I'm going to create a new layer
from that point I'm going to change the properties of that layer from the n the normal to the add
I'm going to stay on my soft brush I'm going to put it to about 10 size and 15 strength
and I'm just going to use this same orange just to start to extend some of the effect that we've
just created a little bit further up and we're going to have it bleeding over here now we did
create the orange earlier on in our color palette when we first created it but really this I suppose
reclaims it and actually claims it in a better way it doesn't matter we had it there initially so
I think sometimes it's useful just to have a sense of the color scheme first
and then you can use other techniques to really bring them out and that's what we're doing I'm
going to go back to layer nine add some extra yellow highlights around this area and again
with the soft brush down the lowest part two percent really quite low on the on the strength
about 10 with the yellow again so that strong yellow around here I'm just going to start adding
some more textures too because we've already got strong sunlight in this area so it is going to
impact the edges of the cloud really dramatically so it absolutely must have a strong highlight
around any features any little dark colors have got to be have a halo around them if you don't
perhaps don't overdo it if you add like I just did then too much of a block of yellow
it just looks too much so you just need to have it as the edges you don't want to completely
create a solid block of that yellow you just really are touching around the edges so just
use it sensitively carefully and then we can extend some of that further up too and again
we can go to this color at the very end which is going to appear pretty
pretty bright not quite as yellow that's fine because we have this more pastel version as we
get further away anyway it's not got the strong color anymore we can use this with
the soft brush now it's just to be a little bit more precise as we go around the edges
and then we can go do all of the areas in fact why not okay we're starting to get closer to a
really nice effect I do think if we go back through our layers perhaps behind the initial
lining so behind layer eight so we'd have to go to layer six in this arrangement click the plus
symbol and it is underneath layer eight where we had the first detail from the cloud I'm going
to go to my colors and perhaps I will use this color initially which again just reminds you is
this color here it's the end of the middle row I'm still on the soft brush I'm going to put it
to about 10 size and really low on this on the opacity so about five percent and I'm just going
use this color now just to bring in lightly a little bit more of an illuminated area and around
this cloud now because when we did the cloud layer here layer seven we didn't necessarily do it at 100
and fill in all these little textures so we will come back in a moment and just
and then that I'm just creating a slight spread of that luminosity into the other regions this
top region with this light color first I think that gels everything together really quite nicely
maybe do it in like an arc that's quite effective around the sun and like I said some of those clouds
perhaps need a little bit of filling in now so we'll go to layer seven back to the color the
dark color that we're using on the end and we may as well stay on the soft brush we'll put it down
to about four percent and up to about forty percent strength and we can just go in any areas now that
are just showing through too much color we can just blot in a bit more again if we need to
sink down to be a bit more precise around the edges then we can do that because I do think
it's quite interesting when the dark color the dark gray color of the cloud has a sharp edge so
we can really blot it in around the edge perhaps now having said that I'm going to add a lighter
color to some of this cloud in a moment and create some extra textures so keeping some
of this is not necessarily a massive problem but we certainly want some of it okay so from that
layer we'll create a new layer on top of layer seven so layer seven is that dark gray create a
layer on top of that and we'll go back to our colors and we've got a slightly lighter gray that
we're going to use again on the soft brush two percent size about fifteen percent strength
create some slightly more refined shapes and edges in this area although it's you know largely
flat compared to the background you're just going to have it bring out the odd subtle edge and
highlights you don't want to emphasize it too much you can just create some round shapes and just
hints of extra detail within those cloud areas but like I say if I go over it too much it's really
going to just draw your attention too much to that gray area and actually really what we want
are people looking at those extra bright colors I think they're the more interesting sections but
certainly just to stop it looking quite so flat a few extra hints that highlights on some extra
tufts kind of round shapes within that cloud section I think will work just hints I'm going
to go to my very top layer which is layer 10 and create a new layer change it from the n again to
the add go back to my colors I'm going to use the yellow I'm going to have it at two percent size
and really low at about five percent opacity and I'm going to start just creating some sun beams
from the sun though everything obviously starts where the sun is but then it extends out as beams
I think even the five percent might be a little bit strong so we could put it down to about three
I want to do this very subtly
extend these lines out you can do it from here as well in fact let's change from the orange let's
go to this color at the very end I think that might do the same job more effectively a little
bit saturated that yellow we can use it to a certain extent but it is really quite strong so
even have them coming out from the actual sun itself to an extent to a certain extent
but then probably we're going to just reserve it for this section from this edge mainly
I'm going to build in some beams that cut it across here
we can build in some beams that cut in from this section maybe some more over here as well
again it's really light and I'm actually just feathering them in I don't want to be too dramatic
and then some more over here as well again all pointing towards that sun
and we just go over this bit a little bit more so maybe interrupts part of the cloud
I think that works quite nicely cut in front blot it out just a little bit I think that's very nice
a couple up here perhaps not too much here's going to be more dramatic
I think anything around here is going to look too much I think that is about the right amount
of balance it's a little bit sharp and a bit clumsy looking so we'll go to the adjustments
and just soften it in slightly to about three percent actually about four percent looks good
stay on the same layer I'm just going to switch to this orange color and I'm going to put it up
to about 25 size and have it at about five percent strength and just a couple of taps in this area
just to again try and help soften it in and I can just do a couple more in that region too
I think that helps I might have a slight rearrangement some extra details in some
of these edges a little bit later on but the general effect is there so I can now move on
and do some of the reflection in the water now now before we add any more layers if you're
struggling with the number of layers because you've got an iPad that doesn't support too many
different layers at this size well you can go to some of the earlier layers so layers one to six
and you can pinch them together merges them as one and it doesn't affect the image at all
so having done that now I'm going to go to the top and create a new layer I'm going to go to
our brushes to the artistic brushes and the leatherwood brush I'm going to tap on a leatherwood
brush and I'm going to go to the stroke path and change the spacing from 17 to really quite
significant about 50 spacing what this allows us to do if I show you here is do a pass across and
you can see it creates a really nice series of shapes but with gaps I want to do this subtly
we don't use an orange we're going to go for the bottom row colors we're going to use this
green to begin with we're going to have the size at about three percent we're going to put the
opacity at about ten percent and we're going to decide where our horizon point is and just a
little bit further down from that we're going to start doing this texture all the way across so we
can run a line initially do another line and keep building it up you can keep going over that point
and really starting to build in that distant water effect we don't want it too high up I've
just done a line that went a little bit too far so I'll just delete a couple you just decide how
much is too much for yourself it doesn't matter if we if we build it up a little bit too much I
can go in and I can erase it a little bit as well we'll bring it a bit further down
we want it to be a little bit stronger that comes closer to us so we can increase the size
to six percent and build this in a little bit more we are obviously going to have to go in
there and control some of these ripples a little bit more but this just gives us a base to work
from really which I think is really useful we've got bigger ripples now and we'll stop doing this
at about this point so that is a good starting point for us perhaps we'll go to the layer click
on the end and just reduce it a little bit it's a little bit strong so we'll put it down to about
75% so everything we've done now is just a little bit more softened in which is great we can then
create a new layer go to our colors I'm going to use this color at the very end here I'm going to
do basically the same again so we want the two kind of merging together we're going to turn it
down again to about three percent keep it at the ten percent strength and again we want to have
them kind of running together so we can run this across like this
and that just gives us a starting point I think we should take these two layers in the interest of
reducing the number of overall layers so we'll take the top layer and we'll merge down so we've
got both those layers now as one layer we'll create a new layer go back to our colors I'm
going to choose this orange because we're also going to change the layer properties yet again
the blend mode has now changed to the add I'm going to stay on the leatherwood brush
but we are going to reduce it massively to about the ten percent we're going to put it at the two
percent size as well and we're just going to carefully now start building in some of these
highlights in this area now position your hand however is comfortable and you're going to start
building them in so it lines up obviously with the sun you can just quite liberally
start adding them here doesn't matter if you create like stripes in fact we we're kind of
looking for that so we're going to have sections where it really clusters together and gaps this
is only the first layer so we're going to do this a few times and we're going to increase the size
to four percent and as we get closer you can see it's just going to run across like this
then we're going to go to the adjustments gaussian blur blur it in to about five percent
we're going to do the same again I'm just going to again start creating some over the top
perhaps reduce it back down again to the two percent for the more distant areas
and just go over this a few times again I'm trying to keep my hands stable I'm
letting it glide along the glass I'm trying to build this up a little bit
like so and again we can go to the adjustments gaussian blur blur it in again to about five
percent and we can repeat the process a few times but we're getting a hazy kind of general sense of
the color so we don't need to do it as big each time don't need to have it extending quite as
far perhaps perhaps within sections we've already created we really start to narrow
down to the center area so it's a true kind of reflection of the where the sun is
we can have it further down over here as well leave some gaps they're important
and adjustments gaussian blur blur it in again to about five percent so we'll create another layer
like 12 I'm going to go to my bottom set of colors I'm going to go for this dark color to
begin with which is pretty much just black I'm going to go to the airbrushing soft brush
cut it down to about three percent size and about ten percent opacity
and I just want to build in some kind of wave across this section
it's got a curve to it and I have it just sort of breaking into
a few different stripes as it comes over to this side as well what I also want to do
is create just a water edge as it breaks onto the sand so I'm going to put this down to one percent
still at the ten percent strength
something like this so that helps us just understand where things are going to be placed
we'll stay on the same layer there's no harm in doing that we'll go to back to our colors
I'm going to use this green color so it's the second from the right stay on the soft brush
built about three percent size and about twenty percent strength and just this point I'm going to
have a wave just swirling up and it's going to be catching the light so you're going to see through
the water and it's going to start you know making it appear this lovely green color in contrast with
the gray blues that are around it and it's only really when we contrast it with the other colors
you're going to see the effect of this but it is a really nice color to have in contrast
reduce it down a little bit to two percent size and maybe we'll have it a little bit up here as
well and sort of bands like this and we'll even turn it down a bit further to the lowest part
two percent maybe just have some sections that are coming in here don't want to connect them
up they need to be a little bit separated like so maybe some over here as well we're going to
use the darker color to really bring out some of these shapes as well maybe up in this distance
section we can just have another area where it kind of amasses together as well we will create
another layer on top go to the layer blend mode put it to the add go to the orange that we're
using before have it on the soft brush at two percent size perhaps a bit strong again so put
it down to about 15 percent and I'm just going to pick out the top edge of this wave a little bit
really going to be catching the light as it sticks out I just want to run along the top of that
slight wave of water and it's just breaking and stands out a little bit more prominently
I'm also going to have some maybe some swells here behind it I can go in now with the soft
brush and just really start concentrating my energy in that section I'm going to reduce it
down a little bit more on the size to the one percent I'm just going to start doing some
textures and little dashes in this area just behind and it just sort of culminates and this
highlights along the top edge again just some dashes as it gets further out then those dashes
become more sparse so you don't want them grouped together when they get further away from that
point obviously they're going to group together in this section and really build up and it really
reflects literally they glow that's up there a really nice way again just have it a little bit
broken in this region and then we can do some more up here as well and continue that idea
so just some dashes and dots we go back in with the green and further break some of this up but
we definitely want a concentration of these types of shapes in the center area and as it
gets further into the distance you do nothing but dots we don't want big shapes up there
we've already got a hint of that suggestion with the leatherwood brush but we're going in there
with a series of very tiny shapes now in the far distance just to bring out more of that effect
I'm just going to go over this bit again like so I'm going to stay on the same layer but I'm going
to switch to my artistic leatherwood brush again and I'm going to put it up to about five percent
size down to about five percent strength and just in this section I'm going to start building in
some highlighted areas in this region
perhaps I'll turn it down a bit more to the four percent and I also pick up a bit up to about 15%
now like this
put some textures initially then I'm going to go over it with the soft brush
and I just have some broken dashes and nice texture to begin with something like that then
I'm going to switch back to my airbrushing soft brush put it up to three percent size low
at about five percent opacity I can just merge these together a little bit now with this it
will soften it in it's important we've done this because this is more the reflection on the sand
which will be very important as you will see okay switch to the smudge tool put it on the
medium brush put it to about three percent size and fifty percent opacity I'm just going to smudge
it in slightly from the two sides we're going to keep some of the texture up in this area
quite dappled still but this area which will be effectively on the sand beyond the water
I just want to have that slightly more smoothed in so we can have that stretching out both left
and right a little bit more just blend it in not too much though
I'm going to go back to layer 12 using the airbrush soft brush I'm going to go to these
colours at the bottom I'm going to choose this third in from the right I'm going to use it at
seven percent size and 25 opacity and I'm just going to add a little bit more of this green here
certainly the top section where it almost meets the wave but we can blend it down a little bit
more as well when you're pressing lightly I'm just going over a few times I'm going to switch
to the next one along this third colouring from the left reduce it down to about five percent
I'm just going to start going over some of these areas again so again that bit here where
we have a shadow and go over that a couple of times maybe also here on the sand I'm going to
turn it up to about 10 size keep it at 25 opacity and just a little bit of darkness coming in there
as well but not as much move along our colours and we've got an even darker colour second in from
the left reduce it down to four percent size and again 25 strength opacity I'll just do one stripe
running across that area then I'm going to switch to this dark colour the first colour
it's pretty much just black again at the two percent size and I'm going to put that about
three percent size and lower on the opacity this time again it's about ten percent I'm just going
to start reclaiming that dark bit make it even darker this is definitely one of the darkest
points now I see like so I'm going to then move the top layer and create a new layer on top of
it so layer 14 now and I'm going to start again going over this line so I'm going to reduce it
down to the lowest part of two percent and put it up back up to about 25 in fact and I'm just
going to go over this line here try and keep it relatively smooth and how it's going to have
wobbles and ripples as it goes along like so just go along here a little bit because we've got a
brighter colour that's underneath it so we just need to make sure that it's a definite dark edge
for these sections just to really exist as a contrast and I'm not going to change layer I'm
going to move to second in from the right at the bottom and perhaps turn the opacity up to about
40 percent just put the size up to the top end of two percent I'm just going to run along that
line now I'm going to create just a lighter colour where the foam the wash meet that kind of edge and
fold so just where the shadow is there's also this edge and perhaps have it a little bit thinner
in places too something like this just reduce it down a little bit more to the lower part of two
percent then I'm going to start adding some breaks in this texture so maybe some kind of bends like
corners where you get a gathering of this shape and then it breaks off again into another series
of clumps and maybe it just splinters off you can sort of snake around a little bit I mean you can
play around with this texture it can be any number of particular formations you don't really need to
worry about it too much just play around with what you think the important thing is is that you've
got some shapes of this colour and also some darker gaps you've got obviously the foam colour is
reflecting the light in a different way than the clear water so a bit of that really shine back
and then other bits are just going to be darker again you can see I'm not spending particularly
long time on that maybe just a couple of sections here that just break away I'm not spending a long
time on that it's not particularly laboured over at all and I'm also going to switch colour to the
end colour on the end which is a lighter colour I'm just going to go over that in places as well
like along the edge where that near where the shadow is then these bits too I'm going to go
back to layer 12 and I'm going to use this third in on the left and I'm just going to start perhaps
making some of these gaps a little bit darker so I can just go over
some of these gaps and it will just help blend it in and just bring out some of these a little
bit better so I can just tease them in a little bit you can see it just brings it to life and
helps blend it all together
maybe I'll do a little bit of a breakaway shape here where it just folds in here too
something like that maybe around the edges of some of these shapes as well
we've got some real bright orange that are there maybe just around the edges of some of those
shapes we can have this slightly darker colour showing through we can always reclaim again some
bright orange go over it's not a problem I'm just building up the textures and I'm also going to
start adding some waves so I've got it to the currently to the 2% I'm going to put to the top
end of 2% keep it at a bit lower so about 30% strength I'm going to start bringing some lines
across the top and almost folding down over that line so we're going to have a series of almost not
quite stripes not in a neat formation anyway but a series of shapes that kind of all fold in together
around this area we can reduce it down a little bit to the lower part 2% and then reduce it down
even further to about 15% just add a little bit of noise and extra textures in this area as well
so it doesn't look completely flat maybe just a little bit along the top edge as well just before
it meets the orange just to exaggerate that contrast and along here as well where again
it folds down I'm going to get that slightly darker colour coming through I'm going to continue that
up into the bits up here as well just some kind of stripes that cut through adding to the textures
that we've already got we don't need to really spend a long time with this you're just
adding more in the mix you definitely still want some of this
darker colour adding to the sense of ripples and waves coming in there
and again I'm not really spending a long time getting these precise in any way maybe I've just
done a couple of lines too strong there but you can start to get the idea maybe what I should do
actually in the distance is turn that opacity down a little bit more more like to 8 or 9%
now I can just continue to add some broken shapes maybe more dots as it disappears into
that distance in fact I've already got a hint of that texture showing through there anyway
and we can just further exaggerate that a little bit more with a few more
shapes that come in from the edge so maybe put that back up again so we're down to the
15 but we'll put it up to the 30 again and just bring some shapes in here
something like this and some more shapes in the side a series of dashes really
and then you press in lightly and you get more shorter dashes and dots as it gets further away
stay on the same layer there's no point change I'm going to go to the colour on the very end
and I'm going to continue to maybe between those dark shapes bring in this slightly more almost
blue colour and if you actually go to the colours it isn't blue at all it's yellow within the grey
but somehow it manages to look blue when you contrast it it's all about what colours it's
next to rather than the colour itself really if you actually started using using a blue
in this section it would be way overpowering and way too much just bringing in from the edges
just a sense that we're picking up some general colour from the
sky in the distance and it's just having an impact and highlighting some of these
ripples and waves
like that a few more over here
I'm going to go to my top layer create a new layer go back to my colours
in fact I'm going to go to the layer properties at the end change it again to the add
go to the orange and I'm just going to use that to bring out a couple of bits in that area
really vibrantly so I'm going to put it down to 2% and also down to about 20% strength I'm just
going to go over a couple of these shapes just to bring in a couple of those highlights more
again bringing the dappled kind of effect in the water as well
you can always add some more into the sand a little bit as well
because it's very wet so it's going to reflect really nicely just to hint more of it in the
sand areas and again we're going to add perhaps just ramp it up a little bit on the top edge
I'm going to turn it down to 1% and then we can just have a continuation a little bit further off
just little points that's really kind of still picking up and twinkling some of that light back
and you can do again a few more points as we go further away as well I can also switch to the
right yellow and perhaps if I turn this strength down to about 10% I can just add a few twinkly
points in the mix on the top edges of some of these so we're at only 1% size on the brush and
10% opacity and bring in just some bright points some twinkly sections that are just catching the
light a little bit more maybe alternate between that and the actual orange for these
and just a few more moving across you decide the level that you want to take it to even add
perhaps the cream color just the odd point here just to ramp it up even further if you feel it's
going to benefit from that because this will appear even brighter than yellow and the orange
again that's just some of that in the sand here and there some extra fine kind of details
don't tend to get overboard with that just just a hint adds to the mix and I'm also going to go to
this black color and I might just do one or two rocks so probably need to go on a normal layer
for that so we'll go back a layer but we had some of the shadow work anyway so we'll go on to layer
soft brush up to 2% size 20% opacity I'm just going to do a couple of rocks in fact let's
change it to the medium brush again 2% size 20% opacity and just do a few stones and things like
that turn the opacity down even further to about 5% that way you can just really
start doing some subtle dots and textures that will really not be as noticeable but
it all helps just stop it looking flat and dead in that area
I think it's better longer as long as you want on these kinds of details
I'm just going to switch this light gray color at the top so second in
from the right I'm going to put it down to 1% size and about 40% strength opacity
maybe just along this edge I'm just going to use it just to
slightly bring in some highlights for that foam area but I really don't want to oversell
that idea I just want to bring out a hint of it here and there along this edge
okay may do a little bit further refining on this but that is the general effect
