Origin of legend
Reports of the monster’s sightings have been going on for about 1,500 years. It is believed that the first person to claim to have seen the creature was the Irish missionary Columba, in the year 565 A.D. According to this story, people holding a dead man approached the religious claiming that the monster was responsible for that death.
Are Columba, then, along with the other citizens, attracted the monster that appeared on the surface. Upon seeing the creature, Saint Columba reportedly made a sign of the cross and this caused the monster to return to the depths of the lake.
However, it was only with the publication of the newspaper that the name "Loch Ness Monster" was used and spread. The idea came from the editor of the newspaper of the time, Evan Barron. And the story did not stop there! In 1934, it was the turn of British surgeon and colonel Robert Wilson to change the game and show a supposed photo of the monster.
The doctor said he was driving along the northern shore of the lake when he spotted the creature and photographed it. The image is known today as the "surgeon’s photograph" and had so much repercussion that it was published by the newspaper The Daily Mail. From then on, the whole world came to know the monster.
