Mont Blanc | What It's Really Like Climbing Western Europe's Highest Mountain (Goûter Route)
Earlier this year I set out to climb Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco), the highest mountain in western Europe at 4810m. Before tackling Mont Blanc however, we climbed Gran Paradiso (4061m), the highest mountain in Italy, as an acclimatisation ascent. This in itself was an amazing experience. Day 1 saw us hike to Refugio Chabod, up through the forests slopes of the Aosta Valley. From here, we set off in the darkness for the Laveciau Glacier, which would take us to the summit. The third day was a descent back to the valley.
For the Mont Blanc leg of our trip, we left Chamonix for Les Houches, catching the cable car to the Tramway Du Mont Blanc. From the final station we hiked to the Tête Rousse Hut (3167m) and stayed the night surrounded by epic mountain scenery. The next morning we set off at dawn up the Goûter Ridge to cross the Grand Couloir and ascend to the Goûter Hut (3835m).
