Straus and Company will be offering this magnificent Chinese croissant and gilt bronze
Ruyi sceptre. It was made during the 18th century, specifically in the Guanglong period of 1736 to
1795. It's very finely inlaid with beautiful lilies and geometric motifs. The dragons are
in high relief in these gilt bronze medallions and are rising from the ocean into these
magnificent clouds. The term Ruyi means as you wish and it's extremely auspicious and precious
object and considered of great value. Wonderful croissant work forms at the back of the head
of the sceptre and down into the base. The wonderful provenance of this beautiful piece
was Sir Eric and Lady Milbourne of Concord Grange near Bath, England. Sir Eric was an honorary
advisor on shipping and port activities to the Minister of Transport. He was instrumental in the
shaping of the Heathrow Airport as we know today. He was also further involved in the expansion of
Gatwick Airport and designed the Marlbury harbours that were used during World War II.
He was knighted in 1950 and received the award of St Michael and St George.
