Wrocław
The city of bridges, full of history
and countless monuments.
This is the place where the Odra River creates picturesque canals
and the charming figures of Krasnali
accompany us at every step.
In this video we will see the historic Wrocław market,
we will walk on picturesque streets,
we will go to the viewing points
and we will get to know the fauna of Africa.
We will dive into the story of the beginnings of water and its role on earth,
we will rest in beautiful gardens
and we will visit the art gallery,
both under the roof and in the fresh air.
Wrocław hides many interesting places
and everyone will definitely find something for themselves here.
We invite you to Wrocław.
We will start visiting Wrocław on the market,
which is one of the most beautiful and largest markets in Poland.
It is surrounded by 60 colorful tenement houses,
which have original names
and which were used by the residents before the tenement houses were numbered.
They come, for example, from the founder's hut
or another characteristic element of the facade.
The most popular tenement houses on the Wrocław market
are, among others, the tenement house under the blue sun,
under the seven electors,
under the griffins,
as well as the tenement house under the golden sun,
in which the Museum of Mr. Tadeusz
with the original manuscript of the Polish National Epoch is located.
It is also worth paying attention to the facade of one of the tenement houses,
on which we will find a painted window,
which makes the symmetry of the building preserved.
The most characteristic tenement houses
that are located near the market
are two medieval tenement houses called Jaś and Małgosia.
They look like a couple holding hands
and are historical remains of the gate,
which led to the pre-church cemetery,
liquidated in the 18th century.
Despite the passage of time,
you can still find the inscription there
Passing through the gate,
we will reach the Gothic Basilica of St. Elżbieta,
which can be visited.
At the 75-meter tower of the church
there is a viewpoint,
from which you can see the historical center beautifully.
Let's go back for a moment to the market that is alive.
Here, there is the Old Town Hall,
which is one of the best-preserved historical town halls in Poland.
This impressive late-Gothic building
was built in stages from the 13th to the 16th century.
Today, the Museum of Urban Art is located in its interior,
which includes collections from the earliest times to the present.
In the basement of the Old Town Hall
there is the Świdnicka cellar,
one of the oldest restaurants in Europe,
operating since 1273.
Being on the market,
it is also worth paying attention to Pręgierz,
which stands in front of the Old Town Hall,
and the monument of the comedy writer Aleksandra Fredry,
Next to the market is the Solny Square,
which was a trading place.
Salt and many other goods were sold here,
and now there is a flower market here,
where you can buy flowers,
at any time of the day and night.
Wrocław is known as the city of Krasnali.
In the 1980s,
the first figures appeared here,
smiling from the bushes,
orange hats,
holding flowers in their hands.
They were the work of the Orange Alternative movement,
which in this way protested against the communist regime.
The drawings were placed on the walls,
on the paint spots,
which were created after the government painted
anti-socialist slogans and inscriptions.
In 2005, the sculptures of Krasnali
became an integral part of the streets of Wrocław.
To see them,
you don't have to work hard,
because their number increases year by year,
and there are currently several hundred of them.
On the Wrocław market
and in its nearest area,
you can see the most figures of Krasnoludki,
including the monument to Pope Krasnal.
Following the Krasnali Trail
is a good idea for a trip with children.
The Pokłotnic Bridge is a footbridge
connecting two towers of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene,
which is 45 meters high.
It is one of the best viewing points
for a historical center,
which is associated with certain legends.
One of them says
that in the evenings you can see
the souls of young women on the bridge,
who, instead of marrying and taking care of the house,
preferred to have fun.
The second one comes from the dark times
of witch hunting.
According to the legend,
if the accused woman managed to cross the bridge,
she was considered to have a pact with the devil
and sentenced to death.
However, if she fell from it,
she was acquitted.
To enter the Pokłotnic Bridge,
you need to buy a ticket
and climb almost 250 stairs.
The interior of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene
can be visited for free.
The shopping mall was built
at the beginning of the 20th century
in a neo-Gothic style
and since then it has acted as a trading place.
It is still a popular place
where you can buy various goods.
The shopping mall offers a wide range
of fresh fruits and vegetables,
dozens of types of cheeses,
freshly roasted coffee beans
and many other products.
The Racławice panorama
is the largest existing image in Poland.
It is 15 meters high
and 114 meters long.
It represents the victorious battle
of the Poles against the Russians
near Racławice
in April 1794.
The Racławice panorama
was created in Lviv
on the occasion of the 100th anniversary
of the Kościuszko Insurrection.
It was painted by a group of painters
under the direction of Jan Styki
and Wojciech Kossak.
The work was placed
in a specially built rotunda,
and the three-dimensional effect
was achieved by combining
an oil painting,
appropriate perspective,
decorative elements
and special lighting.
The Racławice panorama
surprises with the size
and realism of the scenes presented.
To feel even better
in the atmosphere of those events,
the whole staging is explained
by the reader.
In the National Museum in Wrocław
we will find a rich collection of art
from the Middle Ages
to modern times.
You can see here, among others,
works by Matejko and other paintings,
as well as artistic installations,
examples of crafts and costumes,
and gothic tombstones,
stained-glass windows
and hundreds of other works.
Several exhibitions were organized
in the National Museum,
such as an exhibition entitled
Wonders of the Creator,
a gallery of Polish art,
European art, Silesian art
and a collection of medieval art,
as well as a contemporary exhibition.
Ostrów Tumski
is the historical and oldest part of Wrocław,
whose history dates back to the 10th century.
This area was once an island
near the mouth of the Oława River.
Since the 19th century,
it is no longer an island,
but it is still run by bridges,
the most famous of which is the Tumski Bridge.
The Tumski Bridge connects Piasek Island
with Ostrów Tumski.
For many years
it was called the Bridge of the Fallen.
Until 2019,
padlocks with the initials
of the Fallen were hung on it.
After the renovation,
the padlocks could no longer be hung on the bridge,
so they moved to the nearby
Piotr Włostowicz Boulevard
on Piasek Island.
Ostrów Tumski is currently
primarily sacred.
The most impressive building
is the Archdiocese of St. John the Baptist.
It is considered
the first fully Gothic temple
on Polish soil.
From the cathedral tower
at a height of 97 meters,
the panorama of Wrocław
spreads out.
You can take the elevator to the top.
Ostrów Tumski also hides
many other monuments,
such as the Church of St. Marcin
and the Church of St. Idzieg,
which is the oldest church
in Wrocław.
It is also worth paying attention
to the Gothic Collegiate of St. Cross
and St. Bartholomew,
in front of which there is
the largest monument in the world
of John the Baptist.
It is worth knowing that the
Archdiocese Museum on Ostrów Tumski
preserves the Henryk book
from the turn of the 13th
and 14th centuries,
in which the first sentence
is written in Polish.
The Botanical Garden
in Wrocław
was founded in 1811
and is one of the oldest
botanical gardens in Poland.
In the 19th century,
many innovations were introduced,
including geographical groups,
exposition of plant and
mine resources.
Unfortunately, during the Second World War,
the resources of the garden
were seriously destroyed.
In May 1945,
the Botanical Garden
was reopened for visitors.
Today it occupies
almost 7.5 hectares
and gathers nearly 11.5 thousand
plants and their varieties.
The best time to visit
the garden is the period
from May to the end of the holiday.
Then you can see the plants
in full bloom.
The Botanical Garden in Wrocław
is a perfect place for a walk
among beautiful plants.
We are in the district of Nadodrze,
where you can see ordinary,
old and scratched tenement houses.
Their yards, however,
hide colorful murals
that create art galleries
in the fresh air.
To see the colorful yards,
you must go to Roosevelt Street
and enter through one of the gates
to the interior of the estate.
The destroyed walls of the buildings
were revived with colorful images,
characters from fairy tales,
reproductions of famous works of art,
as well as portraits of residents
and their animals.
The idea for a colorful yard
was born in 2013
thanks to the painter
Mariusz Mikołajk,
who started painting portraits
of residents of Roosevelt Street.
A year later,
together with other artists
and residents,
he initiated the project
Podwórko Atelier Sztuki.
Hydropolis is a modern
educational center
dedicated to water issues.
It is located in a historical
underground building
on clean water from the 19th century,
which covers an area
of 4,600 square meters.
Just before entering the building,
you can see an impressive
over 40-meter water printer,
which creates decorative
water curtains.
However, the biggest impression
is made by the main part of the exhibition,
i.e. a room with a panoramic
360-degree screen,
which allows you to immerse yourself
in a story about the beginnings of water
and its role on Earth.
Each room in Hydropolis
is equipped with interactive boards
presenting information
about the most important discoveries
in the underwater world,
the properties of water
and its use by man.
At the exhibition, you can admire
dozens of models of ships, boats
and other constructions.
Several cinema rooms
can also be seen here,
where you can watch
thematic films.
Zoo in Wrocław
is the oldest zoo
in Poland,
its history dates back to 1865.
However,
the most impressive thing
is the part of the Wrocław Zoo
that was created much later,
in 2014,
i.e. the modern pavilion Afrykarium,
which is dedicated
only to the fauna of Africa.
Afrykarium is a complex of 21 swimming pools
in which several thousand fish,
amphibians, reptiles
and mammals live.
It is the first oceanarium
in the world to present
the fauna of one continent,
Africa.
It presents a variety of six regions
of the Red Sea,
East Africa,
the Mozambique Canal,
the Skeletal Coast,
the Okavango Swamp
and the Congo Jungle.
The Wrocław Zoo
stretches over an area of about 33 hectares
and is home
to about 12,000 animals
representing over
1100 species.
Due to the abundance
of attractions,
it is worth booking
at least three hours
from the Wrocław Zoo.
Hala Stulecia is one of the most important
works of architecture of the 20th century,
which was included
in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It is 42 meters high
and 67 meters in diameter.
At the time of its construction,
this hall had a velvet cover
of the largest in the world.
The designer
of the spectacular sports hall
was the Wrocław architect
Max Berg.
Its construction was associated
with the organization of the exhibition
of the century, which commemorated
the century of the response
of Emperor Friedrich Wilhelm III,
calling for widespread resistance
against Napoleon.
In the period of the People's Republic of Poland,
the name of the object
was changed to the People's Hall.
Next to the Hala Stulecia
you can see a multimedia fountain
with an area of about 1 hectare
and which is the largest
of this type of attraction in Poland.
From May to October,
exhibitions with various
types of music are held here every day.
The entrance to the exhibition
is free.
The Wrocław fountain is surrounded
by a historic pergola,
which consists of over 700 columns
covered with vineyards,
which is a great place for a walk.
In the nearby neighborhood of the fountain
there is a pavilion of four domes
in which the Museum of Contemporary Art
and Iglica are located,
which was built
in 1948
and was one of the objects
prepared for the exhibition
of the recovered lands.
Iglica is over 90 meters high
and weighs 44 tons.
The Szczytnicki Park
is one of the largest
parks in Wrocław.
Its area
is about 100 hectares.
It is located
in the former village of Szczytniki
and this is where
its name comes from.
The main attraction
of the Szczytnicki Park
is the Japanese Garden
created in 1913
during the exhibition
organized in Wrocław.
The Japanese Garden
was designed in accordance
with the principles of the creation
of oriental gardens.
You enter its area
through the gate,
and then the path leads
among the exotic plants
to the pond located
in the very center.
It is a perfect place
for a afternoon walk,
especially in late spring.
The entrance to the garden
is free.
A unique place
in the Szczytnicki Park
is also a several hundred-year-old
wooden church
dedicated to St. John Nepomucen.
In Wrocław pod Nasypem
there is a unique
industrial space
consisting of premises
located under the railway viaduct
just a few minutes
from the Wrocław Główny station.
Trains passing over them
add to this place
a unique character.
Pod Nasypem is a place
where the life of Wrocław
gastronomy takes place.
Hidden under the viaduct,
climatic bars, pizzerias
and various restaurants and shops
attract both residents
and tourists.
Sky Tower is the first skyscraper
in Wrocław
and the tallest building in the city.
It is 212 meters high
and on the 49th floor
there is a viewing point.
Tickets for the viewing terrace
are worth buying earlier,
e.g. via the Internet.
Entrances to the 49th floor
are held every 30 minutes.
Through the windows
of the Sky Tower viewing point
a beautiful panorama of Wrocław
You can see the western and northern
part of the city perfectly from it,
but not only.
Through the high windows
