Waukegan National is a small to medium sized, primarily general and corporate aviation airport, located just northwest of the city of Waukegan, Illinois.

0:45 - The runway configuration consists of two intersecting runways labeled 5-23 and 14-32. The taxiway system includes full length parallel taxiways south of runway 5-23 and on either side of runway 14-32. Also discusses the traffic mix.

1:18 - UGN has Class Delta airspace. When arriving pilots may be asked to report at one of several reporting points, some depicted on charts and some not. If you are unfamiliar or can’t locate any of these points, just advise the tower and they will issue alternate instructions. Kenosha Regional Airport (UES) is located north of Waukegan National and has a similar layouts. Pilots have sometimes confused the two.

1:43 - There is a risk of Runway-Taxiway misidentification at UGN. Pilots have confused Taxiway B with Runway 32.

2:16 - Another nationally recognized risk factor are ramp areas that have direct access to runways. While not particularly an issue at Waukegan, the potential does exist at the following locations: Sierra 1 and 3 and Echo 3 along taxiway Alpha.

The FAA's From the Flight Deck video series uses aircraft-mounted cameras to capture runway and taxiway footage and combines them with diagrams and visual graphics to clearly identify hot spots and other safety-sensitive items. Learn more at https://www.faa.gov/FromTheFlightDeck.
