Where are we babe?
We're at the Polar Circle.
Welcome to episode number 8 where we share with you our incredible journey hiking across Scandinavia's most famous trail,
The Kungsleden.
We're almost to Abisko National Park.
Look at how beautiful.
Look at you busting out that map and trying to do some map planning.
I'm learning, not really.
We're about to get ourselves into something.
I'm a seasoned professional.
Another adventure.
It starts from here and it's 6 to 7 days.
Yeah.
About 100 miles.
Mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes are going to be thick.
We're going to need insect repellent.
But we were just driving here and Brittany had this grandiose idea.
Again, we're in a weather crunch.
We have 5 days of sun.
Tomorrow is Wednesday and Sunday starts 90% chance of rain.
Which is also his 30th birthday.
I know, old man river here.
So if we can hike the whole thing and be done by Sunday and celebrate Drew's birthday by relaxing and treating ourselves to a sauna and a shower,
that sounds pretty epic to me.
It'd be quite a treat.
We like to put ourselves through the wringers.
It's supposed to be a lot smoother than the Tour de Mont Blanc and we did.
Which was almost one year exactly ago.
Yeah.
And it was 180 kilometers versus 100 kilometers.
And we did that in 6 days.
So I think we can handle this.
Nikolukta.
You take a bus and it's 3 hours all the way back to Abisko.
To the beginning.
Where our van will be waiting for us.
I think we gotta do it.
So it's currently 11.52pm here in the north of Sweden.
The sun is I think just set.
And we are almost all ready to go to sleep.
Underneath our bed right here we have my backpack for tomorrow which weighs a whopping...
25 pounds.
Mine weighs a whopping 35 pounds.
We're at a ski resort too.
You can see the ski lifts up there in the snow.
Yep, ski lifts up there.
We have an amazing view and the sky is all pink.
So we're gonna go to bed with the sun at midnight.
And we have these dog sliding dogs barking in the distance.
I do.
Just want to show you that this is what 4.40am looks like.
In Sweden.
In July.
What are you doing over there?
I just moved the vehicle to get a little more level.
And I popped the power from the circuit over there out of our van.
And I saw a bright flash of light as the cable broke.
And I'm trying to repair it.
How does it look?
Quite a job.
It's coming together.
We're lacing up our boots.
Tying these boots tight.
Our packs are packed.
It's 9am and...
We're about to get the show on the trail.
King Sladen here we come.
We were super excited to hit the trail.
Our first day was relatively flat.
And we spent most of our time walking on wooden planks.
Enjoying the incredible view.
Oh my gosh. The mosquitoes are eating us alive right now.
It's only 9.30am in the morning.
I think there's a beautiful river behind us.
But I can't focus.
The mosquitoes are tearing me apart right now.
We're apparently in mid-season.
Which is a high season for mosquitoes.
Whack. Snap. Ow. Bang.
It looks so dreamy.
So many greens. These peaks all over here.
It's so vast.
I'm trying to keep up with my babe because she's hiking like a boss.
And there's a mosquito on my arm. Ow.
It's what? About 6.30am now?
Yeah.
We've been hiking for 9 hours?
Something like that.
How far have we went?
Oh gosh.
Like 13 miles.
13 miles.
Holy smokes.
13 miles on day 1 and we still weren't done?
We were feeling pretty knackered at this point.
But we weren't going to stop until we found our perfect home for the night.
Hey babe. Hold up.
What are we doing right now?
Trudging through wilderness and flowers.
On our way home for the night.
I know. We decided there's an epic spot along the riverfront over here.
So you can be the guide and pioneer through all this to get us to camp.
I have pants on so I can test out before you.
Excellent. I'll follow closely.
Where is there a hole? Where should I put the tee?
I just like watching you struggle with the mosquitoes because they are bad right now.
It's intense.
We have a killer camping spot.
It's really beautiful out here.
When packing our food we carried enough for 2.5 days and decided to get the rest at the refuges along the way.
And the dehydrated meals were delicious.
So we just washed our faces down in the water below.
I'm taking refuge from the mosquitoes inside our tent.
And Drew is braving the wilderness.
I'm playing chef.
With my rain pants and down on.
Leaving no skin exposed.
Except for my toes, my hands and my face.
Which they are still getting.
I don't know if you can see but there are literally 50 mosquitoes stuck on our tent.
Let me suck your blood.
Yes and I am making goulash tonight.
You have goulash and what do I have?
You have Indian chicken stew.
Gourmet mosquito.
There will be extra protein in mosquito form.
Mosquito bodies.
Ah he's on my ring.
Cheese.
Those bugs are tearing you up right now.
And I'm all covered in beet so I'm okay right now.
Are you really okay?
Yeah.
They really aren't being around.
You should use some of mine.
But we just crossed that stream in front of us.
Brittany is putting her shoes back on.
That was pretty cold.
It was really cold.
Yeah it was.
I was afraid my feet were going to cramp and I was going to collapse in the middle of the water.
You crushed it.
Like that.
Ow my foot.
You are totally getting destroyed.
Get me the deet.
I'll get you the deet.
I'll get it.
Let's get that bug spray on.
Hurry up.
We are pooped.
We're pooped.
I think we'll have done 30 kilometers today.
Whoa.
No wonder.
Whoa.
Well we're not there yet.
We've been walking through these rocks and snow and rocks and snow.
Rocks and snow and rocks and snow.
It's been a gradual ascent to the highest pass which is right here.
This is the highest pass.
We call it Tujeka because we don't know how to say it.
And how high is it babe?
1,141 meters.
Yes.
So when you compare it with the Tour de Mont Blanc it's really not that bad which had 28,000
feet I think of collective elevation gain.
This has been really gradual which has been a blessing.
But we are planning to camp either on the pass or just beyond it on the plateau.
Someone told us there were good spots there without mosquitoes.
So we're about to hike our first section of snow.
There's literally snow at the end of July out here.
But I guess that's what you get in Nordland.
It's really slippery.
It's not cold at all.
Yeah it's not cold at all.
It's like walking on white sand.
Here take a look.
That's a lot of snow.
What a day.
We made it to the top of the pass.
Wahoo.
Yes.
And I learned that we didn't hike 30 miles today.
We hiked...
30 miles total.
Yeah.
But today we hiked 15.
Look at this.
That was quite a morning.
It's day three and we've been trekking downhill for a ways from our epic camping spot last
night.
I'm just crossing this awesome little bridge right here.
And we've arrived to the hut.
There it is.
There's Brittany up there.
We gotta restock and buy some groceries.
We're gonna go find an epic spot.
The sun's shining.
We've got some beautiful lighting out here.
Finally made it home for the night.
And we didn't get eaten alive by the mosquitoes.
Drew's currently cooking dinner and I wanted to show you the view.
Look at this valley.
No one else is here.
About three more hours till the sun sets.
Yep.
It was worth it.
Tonight we're eating Thai chicken stew.
With crackers.
At least Drew has crackers.
It's super tasty.
Have you had a bite yet?
No.
Tell us if it's actually tasty.
Cause I had a bite and I really liked it.
Show us the front of it.
Mine got a little out of control.
I had to fill it up to line H.
Yeah so they show you what line to fill boiling water up to.
Go for your bite mister.
Looks hot.
Looks good.
It's super.
Drew is finishing off his giant bar of chocolate from Denmark.
Marabou.
Damn.
And every night we've had some tea.
As we watch the sky stay bright.
And then get brighter as the sun rises again.
But today was the longest day yet.
We're trying to beat the rain that's coming on Sunday.
It's Friday night so we basically.
Maybe even tomorrow night.
Yeah.
So we just need to go as far as we can.
Take a look at our view.
It's better than any movie or television show that we could be watching.
We even have a bunch of waterfalls giving this really cool sound.
Yeah it's really nice.
We got a couple birds too.
Good morning day four from our tent.
There's Drew getting water for our camelbacks.
And for our oatmeal and tea this morning.
We went swimming in that lake which was freezing.
So I'm staying in our tent.
Drew's letting me stay warm.
Here I am filling water with our pot from the glacial lake.
Some of the best water we've ever had.
And all of the water along the Kungsleden was clear as glass and safe to drink.
And 14 kilometers left total.
30th person.
Waking up next to a stream eating oatmeal.
We're feeling quite sore but we're rejuvenated and glad that we'll be accomplishing our goal.
La Disco tourist station.
And there's our home.
We're home.
Wow.
On a rainy day.
Talk about mission complete.
A full circle not even knowing how it's all going to work.
No idea.
Planned last minute.
But we really did a good job planning this adventure.
Four days.
I can't say that I want anything more than a shower right now.
It's been quite a while since we've had a real shower.
And we are just feeling grateful to be back at our van right now.
We don't have to build our home tonight.
It's already pre-popped up.
Yeah.
Permanent tent.
With wheels.
And a refrigerator.
Great.
Happy birthday, babe.
Thank you.
Any second now.
There he is.
Birthday boy.
I am the birthday boy.
What's happening?
I've been waiting.
Van wife.
Look at what I did.
Swedish meatballs.
And mashed potatoes and salad.
That's amazing.
Welcome back to life.
What happened to Skip's hand?
I tried setting him up.
He got really excited and then he fell and his hand fell off.
