The trance dance of the Bushmen is a healing ritual, meant to release the power of the local shamans (traditional healers), who in turn heal those who sit in the circle.
The women sit around the fire, singing and clapping, while the healers dance in the inner circle. On their legs, they tie the Joros, an instrument made from cocoons, used to create the rhythm for the dance.
After some time of singing and dancing, the healer will sometimes collapse, which is a sign of him moving to the next stage, gaining access to the healing energy. The singing and clapping must continue for him to recover and stand up, now in a trance mode.
The healer will then walk around the circle, identify those who need healing, and use his released powers to heal them.
