In the early 20th century, a Scottish farmer was walking home past a bog.
Suddenly, he heard someone calling for help. The farmer immediately ran towards the sound
and saw a boy sinking in the swamp. The farmer quickly cut a thick tree branch,
cautiously approached, and extended the branch to the sinking boy. The boy was saved.
Come with me to my house, the farmer suggested. No, no, the boy replied. My father is waiting for
me. The boy, with grateful eyes, thanked his rescuer and ran off. Early the next morning,
the farmer saw a beautiful carriage approach his door. A very well-dressed gentleman stepped out
and addressed him. Are you the one who saved my son yesterday? Yes, I am, the farmer replied.
How much do I owe you? Don't insult me, sir. You don't owe me anything. I did what any normal
person would do. No, I cannot leave it at that. Name your price, the gentleman insisted. I don't
want to talk about it. Thank you. As the farmer turned to leave, his young son came out of the
house. The wealthy visitor asked, is this your son? Yes, the farmer answered proudly. Let's make
a deal. I will take your son to London and cover his education costs. If he is as noble as his
father, neither you nor I will regret this decision. Years passed. The farmer's son graduated
from medical university and later became known worldwide for discovering penicillin.
His name was Alexander Fleming. On the eve of World War II, the wealthy gentleman's son was
admitted to one of London's expensive clinics with severe pneumonia. Do you know what saved
his life this time? That is right, penicillin, discovered by Alexander Fleming. The wealthy
gentleman who had educated Fleming was named Randolph Churchill, and his son was Winston
Churchill, who would later become the Prime Minister of England. Perhaps Winston Churchill
was thinking of events like these when he said, the actions you take will come back to you.
