Coco Gough wins the WTA Tour Finals, defeating Qin Wenzheng in an amazing three-set epic.
This is the post-match reaction.
Let's go through it.
That's right.
And before we go anywhere, smash a like, subscribe.
Let's get stuck into this.
Coco Gough, oh my word, what a match this one was.
She defeated Qin Wenzheng in three sets.
She was down a set.
She was down a break.
But she found a way back.
She was two points away from losing the entire match.
But somehow, somewhere, Coco Gough finds the strength to come through.
What character, what resolve, and what a, well, I don't know, what a woman.
That's all I can say in this ridiculous final.
It was amazing.
And just like the WTA say here, never back down, never what?
And she is the WTA Tour Finals champion in 2024.
What a result for Coco Gough.
What a season.
And at 20 years old, this is absolutely amazing.
Three hours, four minutes final.
And this is the, I believe it's the second longest match of the year.
Incredible stuff.
Absolutely brilliant.
And in the final set tie break, she absolutely controlled it.
She was up six love at the changeover, dropped a couple of points.
But the writing was on the wall.
Coco Gough played some incredible tennis in this match.
And she shows, yet again, that she's never out of any match.
And especially a big match.
Because she plays so well, it seems, in these big occasions.
And the crowd were really invested in this.
There were tons of fans for Jung.
There were tons of fans for Coco Gough.
It was great to see the crowd rocking.
And it was sort of almost impossible to pick the way that the match went.
I mean, I'll take you through some of it.
If we just go even all the way to the third set.
And in the third set, Coco Gough lost her serve straight away.
She was down the break.
She manages to break back to make it 2-2.
And you just didn't know which way it was going to go.
And then she loses her serve again.
And then she comes back again.
I mean, it was beggar's belief.
I can't quite put my finger on how I was feeling the whole way.
I was sort of, oh, Jung's got this now.
Oh, no. Now Coco's got it.
Oh, now Jung's got it.
Now Coco's got it again.
I had no idea who was going to win this.
But it just goes to show how good both of these women were in this final.
And the level that they brought, they really put on a show.
And this is just, this should put WTA on the map.
They should promote this much, much more.
Because if you're going to promote the sport and the future of the sport
in women's tennis, this is the best representative of it by a long shot.
I think this was an absolutely fantastic match.
And they both should be super proud.
Obviously, Jung has won the Olympics this year.
Coco Gough, now the tour finals.
And in doing so, since the introduction of the tier format in 1990,
Coco Gough is the sixth player to win a slam of WTA 1000 event, or equivalent,
and the WTA finals before turning 21, after Selez, Hingis, Sharapova,
and the Williams sisters.
I mean, she is really, the trajectory is crazy.
And to think she's only 20.
It's just insanity.
It feels like she's been around forever.
But she is only just 20.
And she's the youngest WTA finals champ since Sharapova in 2004.
Well done, Coco Gough.
Just absolutely fantastic.
I'm just so happy that there's been a lot of people, a lot of doubters.
She's even been one of her worst critics, I'd say.
She knows what she has to improve in her game.
She knows that the serve, if it's not going right,
then she can be susceptible to some bad results and the forehand.
But she's made such great corrections on both.
And they really, really showed today.
Because I thought she looked just amazing in defense as well.
Jung was so, so good, so aggressive.
And Coco just was able just to stay in the rallies, keep the ball going.
And it ended up paying dividends.
And she ended up getting the win.
We've got some other tweets coming in saying,
just hopping back on to celebrate the end of an amazing season from Coco.
Defended her Auckland title, won her maiden double slam,
won her second 1,000 title, and won her first WTA finals title.
Still only 20 years old.
Incredible future for her.
And the ceiling is just so, so high.
I feel that the fact that she keeps making improvements is just brilliant.
It's worrying for the rest of the tour.
Obviously, we saw her defeat Sabalenka as well.
I don't think many players deserve it more.
I mean, the fact she beat Iga and she beat Sabalenka in this tournament already,
I thought that that was deserving of this victory as well.
I mean, to beat Kim Win Jung as well, it just cements it.
I mean, we're going to see these two play in many finals, I think, in the future.
And they're going to have a very, very close rivalry, I'm sure.
More tweets saying, incredibly gutsy performance from Coco Goff.
There were moments when it seemed like she might be done,
but she made it emphatically clear she wasn't.
Yeah, I couldn't agree with that one more.
And speaking about these two meeting in finals for years to come,
they met in a final in 2018, the Orange Bowl final,
when Coco was 14 and Jung was 16.
So that just goes to show these two,
they were destined to meet in more finals even that many years ago,
six years ago, and they've met in a final, a very, very big one.
I'm sure we'll see slam finals between the two of them as well in the future.
But this one is the first big one and first blood goes to Coco.
And what an amazing result, what a way to end the year for Coco Goff.
I'm absolutely thrilled for her.
I think she thoroughly needed this, she deserves it.
And I can't wait to see how her 2025 goes now as well.
But that's just my post-match reaction to Coco Goff winning the tour finals.
Well done to you, Coco.
Big celebrations tonight, I hope, and well done to Kim Win Jung as well.
A fantastic year topped off with this performance and getting to the final as well.
Let me know your thoughts about the match in that comment section below.
I want to hear what you have to say.
Congratulating Coco and maybe congratulating Jung as well.
And if you haven't done so yet, smash a like, subscribe,
and we'll see you on the next one.
