Good day, friends!
Our episode of the day is a little special.
Today, on vous emmené à l'EDEC, I will take you to the EDEC.
A famous commerce school located in Roubaix, near Lille.
We'll meet international students motivated to learn French.
They were happy to share with us and with you
their experiences of foreign students in France.
Go on, now!
What's your name?
My name is Sanjana and I live in France.
How old are you, Sanjana?
I'm 20 years old.
And where are you from?
From India.
Where in India are you from?
From Mumbai, it's to the west of India.
My name is Varun and I come from a town,
That's a big city in South India, that's Bangalore.
I came to France this year in August.
My name is Shia.
I'm going to see Alexandra.
Alexandra, enchantée, and where do you both come from?
I come from China.
More precisely?
In Canton.
Yeah, it's in the south of China.
How about you?
I come from Poland, from the town of Gorzów Wielkopolski.
It's the long name.
My name is Akshit.
How old are you?
I'm 25 years old.
And what are you doing here in Lille?
I am a student at the EDHEC and I study management.
My name is Shashank.
And how old are you?
I'm 27 years old.
Ça fait combien de temps that you are in France?
I think it's been almost three years since I've been here.
It's really good.
The first year, it wasn't very normal, but right now it's fine.
My name is Puri.
I am an Indian.
I am here for my Master 1 at the EDHEC Business School.
It's specifically for marketing.
Why did you choose L'EDHEC or Lille?
The first reason why I chose EDHEC is that it is one of the most famous schools in the world.
It's the fourth in France and the ninth in the world.
I think it's one of the most excellent schools.
A l'EDHEC, on a concept of gap year, where you can do a small stage in France or in other countries in Europe.
I think that as an international student, it is an excellent idea for me to practice and work in France.
Why did you choose EDHEC?
Because EDHEC is ranked in the world.
That's why you chose EDHEC.
I love France and I love the EDHEC.
Because the people are very cool, very nice.
Les filles, do you like the life of a student or a student in Lille?
I think Lille is really the living and perfect life for students with lots of bars and clubs.
Would you like to be as comfortable in French as Josh or Alexandra?
Practice, practise and practise, and for that, nothing better than a French teacher.
But it's much too expensive!
And no, not in Italian.
Italki, is the sponsor of this video, but it's above all a super platform of language courses online
where you will find dozens of private tutors ready to help you.
You can choose your teacher according to your availability, budget and needs.
So, settle down comfortably, choose your teacher, your hours of class
And start now your journey to excellence in French.
And in addition, after your first lesson, you'll receive a $10 Italian credit.
And do you like the life of a student in Lille?
I like the fact that the job is the same as my life in Bangalore in India.
And I also like the building and architecture in general in France and in Lille.
Have you visited other cities or other places in France?
Yes, I visited Paris and Dunkirk in France.
And what do you like?
I like the beach and the sea, and I like Paris and Dunkirk.
And are there other places in France besides Lille that you know and like well?
I like Paris, it's more international.
There are many restaurants, many museums, many tricks to have fun.
And I find it's really easier to meet friends in Paris because there are lots of people who come.
A la vie plus petite, it's a little more difficult because everybody knows déjà soi.
Two weeks ago, I was in Marseille and I really like this life because it's too beautiful.
With the nature, the beaches and all that, it's too, too beautiful.
Are you already in Paris?
Yes, I did.
Do you prefer Paris or Lille?
Lille.
Why Lille?
Because in Paris, there's a lot of traffic in the streets.
A lot of cars.
Oui, beaucoup de voitures, beaucoup de bruit. I'm not sure what you mean.
Et Lille, you find more calm?
Yes, it is very calm, very natural.
Do you like the environment in Lille?
Yes, it is excellent.
I'm a person who likes small towns and so I think Lille, that's just it.
There are little houses, there are really beautiful streets.
So, it's excellent. It's just for me.
And you come from where in India?
I'm from Mumbai, one of the most famous cities in India.
Yes, it is Mumbai.
And the weather in Mumbai now, it's not exactly cold.
It's hot.
It's hot, yes, all the years.
Did you have the culture shock when you came?
Anything that surprised you when you came to France or Lille?
So, when I arrived here, one of the cultural shocks was that the French don't talk to you if you're not a Frenchman.
And it was one of the cultural shocks for me because when I went to talk to the French,
It was a little confusing, it was a little worrying to talk to them.
But little by little, I think it's improved.
Now, I can speak in French with my friends in France.
I can speak French with my team too.
Yeah, it was a culture shock at first, but now, it's good.
And also, you need patience for the friends.
Because the French, I think we can close for people who come from abroad.
So it takes a long time to make friends with the French.
But afterwards, they're good, really good friends.
But it takes time.
And in the culture, when you say, what shocked you the most when you came here?
I think there are many choices.
Because for the first year, it was really difficult to talk to people.
It wasn't the same as in India.
There, you can talk directly with anyone.
And after that, even though I said hello a few times, I didn't get a very good answer.
But that's because I think there was a language barrier.
But right now, it doesn't exist for me.
Because I'm trying to speak more and more French.
And yes, it was the first thing I saw in France.
And do you think that there are things very different in comparison to India, in France?
Yes, in India, the building is very colourful.
And there in France, the building is neutral.
And another thing that is very bizarre in France, is the fact that in India, you don't smoke on campus.
And there are a lot of things, there are a lot of people who smoke on campus.
Yes, it is very bizarre.
And does that bother you?
No, no problem for me.
Are there things that shock you in France, that you find really not good?
The people here, they smoke a lot, all the time.
Are there things in France that you find different?
The food, the plate, it's very different.
Because it's very spicy in India, but it's very sweet here.
For example, do you like to taste cakes, pastries?
The cakes, pastries, croissants, pain au chocolat.
Do you love it?
Yes, I like croissants.
And in terms of food?
In terms of food, I like cheese and fries very much.
The French fries?
Oui, the fries, I like a lot.
But are there fries in India or not?
The fries in India, it's not very good, but the fries here, very good.
Do you miss the Indian food?
Yes, the naan, the cheese naan.
What do you miss, the dogs already?
Yeah, because I'm a vegetarian, so I like to eat vegetarian things.
And it's really too hard to find a very good taste in France.
Moins d'options? What are you doing?
Less options and afterwards I normally prefer to return to my box,
Because I cook myself during the evening and I prefer to eat things that I cook,
Because if I wanted to eat vegetarian things outside, it's usually too expensive.
And less options and the taste maybe, it's not...
It's not the point, it's not so important.
Oui, et moins d'épices aussi, donc moi je préfère plein plein plein plein of spices, and I'm going to have to go with the full full of spices.
But not very spicy, but with lots of flavors.
So I think there's less flavor in France,
But it's not a big deal because you know, the peppers are not bad either.
