Kimora Lee Perkins was born on May 3, 1975, in St. Louis, Missouri. Her mother, Joanne Perkins,
also known as Kyoko Syng, is from Japan, while her father, Vernon Whitlock Jr.,
is of African-American descent. According to The Guardian, her parents were not married when she
was born, and she was primarily raised by her mother in a suburb of St. Louis. Her father,
meanwhile, reportedly spent time in prison for drug trafficking. During her school years, Kimora
was frequently bullied because of her height—she was 5'10" by the age of ten. Her classmates would
call her names like “giraffe,” making her school experience difficult. Simmons struggled to find
confidence and felt, in her own words, "different. To help boost her confidence, her mother enrolled
her in modeling classes when she was eleven. Two years later, at thirteen, she was offered an
exclusive modeling contract with Chanel. Shortly after turning fourteen, she flew to Paris to work
under the guidance of the legendary Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld. Simmons quickly made
a name for herself in the fashion industry when Lagerfeld closed his haute couture show with her,
walking down the runway dressed as a child bride. Standing nearly six feet tall, Kimora had a
striking, distinctive look that set her apart, especially as a young woman of African-American
and Japanese heritage—an uncommon representation in high fashion at the time. She quickly rose to
prominence in the late '80s and '90s, walking for renowned designers like Yves Saint Laurent,
Valentino, and Fendi, and gracing the covers and pages of top fashion magazines, including Vogue,
Harper's Bazaar, and Elle. Kimora’s career truly soared during her time with Chanel, where she
became a muse for Karl Lagerfeld, who famously called her his 'face of the 21st century.'
In addition to modeling, Kimora later became a successful businesswoman, launching her own brand,
Baby Phat, in 1999, which became one of the first major lifestyle brands representing urban
fashion. She also ventured into television as a host, actress, reality star, and producer. Yet,
while Kimora’s professional life thrived, her personal life followed its own unique journey.
At just 17, Kimora met Russell Simmons, a prominent music and fashion entrepreneur
who would become her first major relationship. The two married in 1998 and had two daughters,
Ming and Aoki. However, their relationship encountered challenges, and by late 2006,
they decided to separate, officially divorcing in 2009. By then, Kimora had already found love again
with Djimon Hounsou. They were first seen together in 2007 and quickly connected. Kimora described
him as 'deeply compelling and utterly sweet,' while Djimon admired her beauty, intelligence,
and strong family values. Djimon was already well-known as an actor and model. Born in Benin,
Africa, he immigrated to France at a young age, where he initially struggled to establish himself.
His career took off after being discovered by a fashion designer, leading to success as a model
and later opening doors in Hollywood. Hounsou gained widespread recognition for his role as
Cinqué in Steven Spielberg's Amistad (1997), which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. He continued
to impress with memorable performances in films such as Gladiator, Blood Diamond, and In America.
Djimoun and Kimora’s relationship blossomed quickly, and it was clear from the start that
their connection was genuine. By 2008, they were expecting their first child together. Although
they weren’t formally engaged, the couple had a commitment ceremony while visiting Djimoun’s
family in Benin, Africa. They made it clear at the time that the ceremony wasn’t a marriage.
In May 2009, they welcomed their only son, Kenzo Lee Hounsou, which deepened their bond
even further. Djimoun also got along well with Kimora’s daughters from her previous marriage,
and together, they formed a happy and loving family. Djimoun and Kimora were rarely apart;
they were inseparable. You could see how deeply they cared for each other just by
looking at them. Kimora once said, “I feel like he’s my long-lost other half. Something about
him is really nourishing for my soul and makes me very happy.” Djimoun expressed similar feelings,
stating, “No woman has ever made me feel the way she makes me feel. She makes me dream big.”
Everything seemed to be going well for the couple, and many expected them to marry soon,
as they appeared so happy together. However, in October 2012, they shocked everyone by announcing
their breakup. Their son, Kenzo, was only three years old at the time. Some reports suggested that
the split occurred after a disagreement over money matters. Kimora's ex-husband, Russell Simmons, had
stopped supporting their extravagant lifestyle, which led to a "big fight over money." The rumors
about financial trouble were further fueled when Kimora put her Los Angeles mansion on the market
for $4.7 million, significantly less than its peak value of $5.9 million. Another source
speculated that Djimon may have had an affair with a Sudanese-Egyptian author, who claimed she "slept
with Hounsou throughout his period with Kimora." However, Djimon strongly denied the accusations,
stating, "I am a man of integrity and would never betray my wife or my family." To this day, the
real reason behind their breakup remains unclear. In 2019, things took a turn for the worse between
Djimon and Kimora when they became entangled in a custody dispute over their son, Kenzo. Djimon
claimed to TMZ that Kimora was often keeping their son away and didn’t let him see Kenzo on Father’s
Day. However, sources close to Kimora alleged that Djimon had threatened to take Kenzo to
Africa and not return. It’s unfortunate to see how their once-loving relationship turned into such a
conflict. In 2013, Kimora moved forward with her life, marrying investment banker Tim Leissner in
a private ceremony. They welcomed a son, Wolfe, in 2015, and in 2020, they adopted a son named Gary,
expanding their family to five children. However, by February 2022, it became apparent that Kimora
and Tim were no longer close, and in April, they divorced. Meanwhile, Djimon also found love again
with a woman named Ri’Za Marie, with whom he had another son. Today, Kenzo is 15 years old,
and he is very tall, standing at an impressive 6 feet 4 inches. Although his life is quite private,
Kimora often shares glimpses of their family on social media. Kenzo is passionate about sports,
particularly basketball. In July 2024, he graduated from middle school, and according
to his mother, he will attend a "top high school for basketball." He also shares a close bond with
his stepsisters, Aoki and Ming, who have pursued modeling careers like their mother. Do you think
Kenzo should pursue a path in sports or follow his parents’ footsteps in the entertainment world?
