Peanut butter & jelly. Fish & chips. Coffee & doughnuts. Wine & cheese.
Strawberries & cream. These are all foods that are good together,
and etymologically “togetherness” is what “being good” is all about. The
underlying idea here is “gathering”, with together coming from Old English togædere,
from Proto-Germanic *gaduri “in a body”, from the Proto-Indo-European root *ghedh- “to unite, join,
fit”, also the source of Proto-Germanic *gaduron “to come or bring together”, from which comes Old
English gaderian “to gather” and Modern English gather, and of Proto-Germanic *godaz “fitting,
suitable”, from which comes Old English god “good” and Modern English good (Modern English god is,
surprisingly, completely unrelated). The sense shift of good was from “brought together”,
through “united”, “fitting, suitable”, “pleasing”, and finally to “good”.
