Zeus is one of the most prominent figures in ancient Greek mythology, known as the King of the Gods.
His story begins with his parents, the Titans, Cronus and Rhea.
Cronus, fearing a prophecy that one of his children would overthrow him, devoured each of his offspring at birth.
However, when Zeus was born, Rhea tricked Cronus by giving him a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes, instead of the baby.
He buried Zeus in a cave on the island of Crete, where he was raised in secret by nymphs.
When Zeus grew up, he sought to free his siblings, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Demeter and Hestia, from Cronus' stomach.
He did this by giving Cronus a potion that caused him to vomit up the children, who emerged fully grown.
Together Zeus and his siblings waged war against Cronus and the Titans, a conflict known as the Titanomachy.
After a ten year struggle, Zeus and his allies emerged victorious, imprisoning the Titans in Tartarus, a deep abyss in the underworld.
Following this victory, Zeus became the ruler of Mount Olympus and the supreme god of the Greek pantheon.
He was associated with the sky, thunder and lightning, often depicted wielding a thunderbolt.
Zeus was also known for his many affairs with both goddesses and mortal women.
Which produced a number of important gods and heroes, including Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Perseus and Hercules.
Despite his power, Zeus was not always seen as a perfect or just ruler.
He was known for being vengeful, especially against those who defied him, and was often involved in complex relationships with other gods and mortals.
His reign as the king of the gods, however, symbolized order and authority in the cosmos, balancing the forces of nature, fate and human life.
