You will learn how to propagate magnolia trees from cuttings successfully.
The instructions are the same for propagating different types of magnolia cuttings including
deciduous magnolias and evergreen magnolias such as magnolia grandiflora, southern magnolia,
little gem, Japanese, and port wine. The best time for propagation of magnolia from
cuttings is from spring to summer when the temperature is more than 21 degrees Celsius.
Take about six long inch cuttings from newly growing tips of branches.
Cut from the point where the new growth has emerged from old wood.
Remove all the leaves from the bottom and dip the cut ends in clean water as you prepare for
other things. Take a small pot with drainage holes at the bottom and fill it with coarse river sand.
Thoroughly wet the soil. Ensure that the soil is wet at all places.
Scrap the lower one inch of the cutting with the knife and apply rooting hormone.
You can use honey solution, aspirin or cinnamon powder in place of rooting hormone.
Insert a stick in the soil down to a depth one inch above the bottom.
Here I am propagating a deciduous magnolia. Insert the prepared cutting in the hole. Do
not push and secure it by pressing the soil around it. You can plant more than one cutting
in one pot. Enclose the pot in a polythene bag and place in a bright place but away from direct sun.
Open bag every 10 days and spray some water. Close the bag again. New leaves and roots will
grow new six to ten weeks. Open the bag and let it remain in shade for another three to four weeks.
Water daily. Fill a pot with nutrition rich soil. Mix cow manure and coarse river sand
in potting mix in equal amount. Transplant the rooted magnolia cutting carefully.
