Welcome back to Fenway Canine Training guys and today we've been working with an adorable
eight week old Golden Retriever puppy named Iris and I thought this would be a wonderful
opportunity while she takes a little snooze to give you my top three tips to help you
survive, not only survive, but thrive in the first 24 hours with your new brand new adorable
puppy.
The first tip that I think should be absolutely non-negotiable for every dog owner is crate
training and pen training your puppies.
Giving them a safe confined space that you can control to set them up for success rather
than giving them too much freedom to set them up to fail is a wonderful thing.
Now in our perfect puppy course we have crate training guides that allow you to crate train
your dog perfectly on day one, which then means that they'll take all their naps in
a crate, they'll happily settle down and go to sleep in their crate and they'll happily
sleep at night in their crate, which is a wonderful thing to help survive those 24 hours,
but like I mentioned also allow you to thrive in those 24 hours.
My second tip is to start as you mean to go on.
Ask yourself the question, what do you want your two year old fully grown version of your
brand new puppy to be like?
How do you want to live with them?
How do you expect them to behave?
Well then start like that from the second that you bring your dog home.
Don't think just because it's their first day you want to feel sorry for them and cuddle
on them all day.
You're simply going to be sending mixed messages.
When you start to change that you provide confusion.
A confused dog then doesn't want to look up to you for guidance and direction because
you're not being a consistent leader, which then means that they'll start to make decisions
for themselves rather than look up to you for guidance and direction and those decisions
that they start to make for themselves usually aren't the right decisions.
So have that talk with your family up front.
Think about what you want your rules, boundaries and expectations to be.
What is your obedience training program?
What is your socialization program?
What is your manners program?
What are the rules within your home?
Think about all of those things.
Come up with an answer to all of those questions and from the very first second with your new
puppy start implementing those things.
Start as you mean to go on.
One of the main struggles that people have in the first 24 hours with their puppy is
night time.
Getting through that first night worried that they're going to scream, howl and bark the
whole night away.
Now again, we've got loads of different tips on the nuances of those things.
One of the main things I want you to help with is first of all crate train your dog.
Brilliant.
And then what I want to do is to help with toilet training is get through that first
night without any accidents.
If they don't have accidents, they're less likely to be disturbed and disrupted within
their crate.
They're more likely to be content, dry and happy within their crate, which means they're
more likely going to settle down asleep in their crate.
One of the best ways you can do this, a little trick is remove water and make sure you feed
them their last meal three hours before bedtime.
You should still be taking your puppy out for toilet breaks on the hour, every hour,
but then when the time it comes to them going to bed at night, they should have flushed
most of the things through, which means that you only have to get up once in the night
to give them another opportunity to go out and they should get through that first night
in their crate happily, but then also without any toilet accidents, which again, not only
helps you survive the first 24 hours, but also thrive in those first 24 hours.
So I hope that was helpful guys.
I hope you enjoyed it.
If you did, give the video a thumbs up, subscribe if you're new here, because I can't wait to
see you on the next episode of Femre Canine Training, where maybe one day you'll get to
meet an awake iris and we can do some more fun videos.
