Saoirse Ronan talks about being told by Chappell Roan that they look alike, getting married over the summer and coming out of semi-retirement to work with Steve McQueen on Blitz.
Welcome back to the show.
I have so much to get into.
First of all, I want to congratulate you
because this summer, you got married.
Congratulations!
All right.
Fantastic.
Yeah.
I got married.
I'm 30 now.
I'm old.
Oh, my gosh.
When I met you, you were a baby.
Spring chicken.
You were tiny.
Yeah.
A baby.
It's been a while.
I wanted to ask you about this, if you've heard about this.
Online, a lot of people are saying that you look like Chaperone.
People think you and Chaperone are the same person.
In fact, even Chaperone herself posted this on TikTok.
Take a look at this.
I mean, come on.
Were you aware of this?
Do you see the resemblance?
I do.
And the person who made me aware of it was Chaperone.
I met Chaperone.
I became so obsessed with her over the summer, just like everyone else.
Her and Charli XCX.
Yes.
Me too.
Brat, brat, brat.
Yes.
Brat all the way.
And she, yeah.
And so I went to her gig.
And randomly, lovely Brie Larson was there as well, who I know a little bit.
I love Brie Larson.
And she brought a friend of hers.
And afterwards, her friend was like, I'm going to go over.
I'm going to talk to her parents.
And we were like, no, you've got to play it cool.
We can't, like, let her know that we love her as much as we do.
We have to storm out of here.
We didn't have a good time.
It was really aloof and cool.
And so he went over.
And it turns out that her friend is from the same town as Chaperone's family.
Anyway, we went over.
And I was playing it really cool.
Her and Brie were, like, chatting in the corner.
And I was like, cool, I'm going to go.
And she called me over.
And she said, oh, everyone says that we're the same.
Yeah, you have to get it.
Here's a photo proving that you guys are different people.
So there you go.
We're in the same room.
We both exist.
But she's just, she's just incredible.
She's unbelievable.
And I love how she's spoken out about just, like, the kind of insane treatment that famous people get.
And she's just been, yeah, she's been the best.
And she's fresh.
She's a little fresh air for everybody.
And she sat right here.
Yes, she really did.
She sat right there.
And this.
I love this.
She was unbelievable.
And she gave you a run for your money as well.
She's a toughie, man.
She went for it.
I'm like, let's go, pal.
She was the best.
I loved it.
She's a firecracker.
I loved her so much.
We've sung on the show.
We've done bits in the show.
Would you ever sing a song with Chapel Rowan?
No, I wouldn't.
I'm not good enough to sing with Chapel.
That is not true.
No, I'm not good enough.
Saoirse!
Look at me.
James!
Don't!
James!
I'd like, I would play a tambourine for her.
Or I'd like.
A tambo?
I'd do a tambo, yeah.
Okay, yeah, okay, good.
Yeah.
Do you, do you, do you do karaoke and stuff like that?
I've never.
I do.
What?
You've never seen me?
I was going to say, I've never hung out with you outside the show.
I mean, we've sung on the show.
Yeah.
But if we did, would we go to karaoke?
Yeah, I feel like we would do Fairytale in New York, which is what we did the last time.
That would be our thing.
You crushed that one.
I mean, my, I don't like to sing in front of anyone unless it's you, James.
Thank you.
But I've been desperate for myself and my husband Jack to do like a cheesy karaoke duet.
You need like a couple song.
And it's Shallows from A Star is Born.
And I want him to be my Bradley.
And you would be Gaga.
And I'll be his Gaga.
And he won't do it.
He won't do it.
He's out.
He's, yeah, he's just, he hasn't committed.
And I'm sort of like, well, what's marriage for?
You know what I mean?
What are we doing here?
If it's not a couple, if we're not chips and guac on Halloween, what are we?
Right.
Exactly.
I tell you, yeah.
Before we talk about your new movie Blitz, I wanted to mention that you also starred
in and produced another one this year called The Out Run.
It was just nominated for nine British Independent Film Awards.
Independent Film.
You did it.
Independent Film.
We made it ourselves.
We built it from the bottom up.
And yeah, now we're getting nominated.
Congratulations.
That must feel good, right?
To put all that work in and you get a little good reviews and all this stuff.
Just a little pat on the back.
Just a little go, hey, you're doing a good job.
I mean, it's what you do.
That's why I'm here.
That's why I like to come back here.
Because you just give me the pep talk that I need.
Yeah, that's all.
Yeah.
That's why I'm here.
I can go now.
No, you can leave now.
No, no, we have to talk about Blitz.
Oh, yeah.
OK, OK.
How about this?
Because you're doing The Outrun and then I heard or read somewhere, heard, but I don't
read.
But I.
Someone told me.
But they said that you said, well, I think I'm going to take a little break after Outrun.
And I don't want to do anything right now.
I just want to get married.
I want to just chill and just enjoy life.
I.
Yes, I had done a movie in Australia, like at the tail end of Covid, which is sort of
intense in its own way.
I had a great time, but I was away from home for a really long time.
Then I was going on to The Outrun, which was going to be intense as well.
And so I said to my agent, I'm going into sort of semi retirement.
And the only way I will come out is if like someone like Steve McQueen comes along.
Yes.
Ha ha ha.
Steve McQueen.
And offers me a role in his movie.
Ha ha ha.
Yeah.
A chance would be a fine thing.
And so my agent called me back a few days later and he was like, yeah, so Steve McQueen's
been on the phone.
He actually did.
Yeah.
Is that wild?
Yeah.
And so he gets so he calls you up because I want you for this role in Blitz.
Well, he didn't know.
He didn't say that he wanted me for the role.
Originally, I really had to sing for my supper.
Literally.
Yeah.
So I got on the phone and it was like a 20 minute long interview.
And he was like, can you do accents?
I said, yes, I can do accents.
Can you sing?
And I went.
Yeah, it's all good.
And I did a singing lesson then afterwards.
And that's when I got the role, when he knew that I wasn't completely tone deaf.
But he should have just watched what we did here.
Exactly.
Steve, just watch this tonight show.
You'll see what everyone can do.
Yeah.
Come on.
You know.
How do we describe Blitz?
It's set in London.
World War Two.
Yeah.
It's set during the Blitz, which was sort of like an eight month, very horrendous time
during the Second World War.
And it's set over three days and it follows a little boy and his mother as they're separated.
She evacuates him to the countryside as hundreds of thousands of children did during that time.
And he jumps off the train, tries to make his way back to London.
And it's about them trying to find each other again.
I want to show everyone a clip.
Here's Saoirse Ronan in Blitz.
Take a look.
Make a wish.
Think.
One wish.
What a lovely boy.
What a handsome.
Dad!
Saoirse Ronan, everybody!
Blitz is now playing in select theaters and premieres on Apple TV+.
