Where different cultures and religions meet in Malaysia ¦ WIDE
Located on the shores of the strait which bears its name, Malacca is the oldest port in Malaysia. Its strategic position on the major maritime trade routes meant the city flourished from the 12th century. In the 15th century, thousands of Chinese and Arab merchants plied the city’s streets. Then came the Portuguese and Dutch in the 16th and 17th centuries. While the Catholics and Protestants left many legacies of their passage here, today it is Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus who form the biggest communities in Malacca.
Besides its mainland territory, Malaysia also includes part of the immense island of Borneo. Eastern Malaysia is mainly covered by rainforest, and is home to thousands of animal and plant species, making it a paradise of biodiversity. Over the past 8 years, no fewer than 124 new species have been discovered in these forests.
