Welcome to Lifestyle News 360.
You know how U.S. presidential elections are a pretty big deal?
Well, turns out they've also had their share of hilarious and just plain bizarre moments.
Well, the 1800 election was a total mess.
Jefferson and Burr tied, and it took the House of Representatives a week to decide.
Alexander Hamilton, who hated them both, actually helped Jefferson win.
Later, Burr shot Hamilton in a duel.
Seriously, political rivalries back then were intense.
Then there's the 1824 election with the infamous Corrupt Bargain.
Jackson won the popular vote, but Adams became president thanks to some shady backroom deals.
Jackson was furious, calling it a corrupt bargain,
and used that anger to win the next election in 1828.
In 1872, Horace Greeley lost the election and then died shortly after.
His electoral votes were scattered, making it a truly bizarre ending.
The 1880s elections were a circus.
So many candidates, and a lot of them were seen as kind of ridiculous.
Political cartoons mocked the candidates relentlessly.
People were so cynical about the whole thing.
Then there's the 1920 election, where Eugene Debs ran for president from prison.
He was jailed for opposing World War I.
He still got almost a million votes.
And who could forget 1948?
The Chicago Tribune messed up big time.
They printed a headline saying,
Thomas Dewey beat Harry Truman before all the votes were counted.
Truman actually won.
And he even held up a copy of the wrong newspaper at a press conference, dot classic.
The 1960 debates were the first televised ones.
Nixon looked awful on TV, while Kennedy looked great.
Radio listeners thought Nixon won, but TV viewers picked Kennedy.
It showed how important appearances are in politics.
During Richard Nixon's presidency,
Nixon literally kept a list of his enemies.
It included celebrities and journalists.
It was so petty that it became a joke,
even though the Watergate scandal was anything but funny.
In 2000, hanging chads and recounts, the Bush versus, Gore election was a mess.
Hanging chads, those little bits of paper on punch card ballots,
became a symbol of the chaos.
Election officials trying to figure out voter intent from those things was something else.
The recounts and legal battles were the stuff of legends and late night comedy.
The 2016 election saw an explosion of memes and humorous content on social media,
particularly surrounding the personalities of the candidates, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
From Trump's unconventional campaign style to Clinton's email controversy,
the election became a fertile ground for satire and comedy.
So yeah, presidential elections are serious business,
but they've definitely had their funny and strange moments.
It's all part of the crazy, colorful world of American politics.
