O'Callaghan and McIntosh Shine | Swimming Day 3 Highlights | #Paris2024

The women's 200 metre freestyle final. Australia in the middle, bookended by the United States and Hong Kong. We'll know very soon whether or not the advice of going from the gun to Molly O'Callaghan is going to be taken. She looks technician in the freestyle is Siobhan Hawkey and she looks as though she will almost lead it around at the 50 metre mark. She knows how to race this, she knows that she also has to go out fast because Tim has had so much endurance and speed to be able to bring it back. Right there in the middle, the two yellow caps for the moment. And Yung across in lane number two is putting in a nice first 100 metres. We'll take a look at the record splits, 55.85 at the 100 metre mark is that world record split. So she is, sorry, the Olympic record split, she is ahead of Olympic record time and Hawkey makes a bit of a move and I just love watching Molly O'Callaghan swim. She is almost like just a shark lurking on the outside. In one turn, she rewrote the script of this 200. She used to own the world record, now she has the gold medal. O'Callaghan and Titmus, gold and silver for Australia. Hawkey, bronze for Hong Kong. Magnificence. The women's 400 IM final here in Paris has commenced. The start isn't going to win you the event, but it certainly helps your setup. Back down in lane number seven, Ella Ramsey from Australia, great start. She had a very good reaction time. Every great athlete, every great performer. In fact, most people that have a great outlook on life will tell you, you must try to better yourself every time you get a chance. McIntosh has two laps to go until she gets a possible gold medal. We are looking at a fantastic swim. She's turned in 324.95. Now it is about how fast she can swim. She's off world record pace. A 50 freestyle from now. There's her final turn. Two and a half seconds roughly over the world record, but for second and third, Katie Grimes sits in third. And here comes Emma Wyatt for the Americans for a possible bronze. And putting down the head with 15 meters to go, 25 meters to go, is Summer McIntosh. She's putting in a big six beat kick, trying as hard as she can. There is a race on for third. Summer McIntosh teaches a master class in the 400 IM as she masters the field to win her first Olympic gold medal. It is Katie Grimes with the silver, and America gets the bronze as well in the form of Emma Wyatt. What a swim. Men's 200 meter freestyle final is in the water, and they pop up ready to do battle. Basically all even. Yeah, there's not a lot in it already, but you just start to see the Romanian cap in the center of the pool, edging forward. Matthew Richards also had a great start over in lane number one, so he will try to sprint it out. But really it's about consistency here. Who can just take it out as fast as he possibly can, bookend it with a good end lap. Mertens is leading the 400 champion, swimming down to 200, is showing that he is absolutely going to take this out to Popovich. He's more of a 100 freestyler suit. You would expect him to be near the front, and already Mertens, as you mentioned, a gold medal in the foreign free, first at the 100, half a second ahead of Richards. And 50.52 at the 100 meter mark. The 400 champion, he's got endurance. Lou Popson from the United States starting to come through as well, but Popovich has closed the gap. It's going to be down to the last 50. This is a full-on sprint. History, a chance, and look at that. Lou Popson, what a last 100 he has put in. Mertens and Richards as well. It will go down to the touch. Popovich looking like he can edge ahead. He finally has an Olympic medal, and it is gold. The perfect color to go with his perfect poolside panache. This is the women's 100-meter breaststroke final in the midst of their pullout. It was Teng from China, the fastest in the first 50 this morning. And has got off to a great start here in this 100-meter breaststroke. Really stroking fast there in lane number six is Teng. Across the field, don't be fooled by Tatiana Smith's pacing right now, because she will come home very fast as the 200 Olympic champion from Tokyo. Teng from China, first at the wall, over half a second ahead of McSherry and Evans. That is a very fast split, sub 30 seconds, 29.94. Always when you go out that fast, the question is, is it too fast? Will you start to fatigue? She still has a lead right now, but across at the top of the pool, it's Palato. Look at her go. The Italian on the outside trying to fool everyone. You've got Teng coming back from China. Medals to be decided. The lunge for the wall. It is Tatiana Smith, gold. Teng from China, silver. And Mona McSherry from Ireland, bronze. They are submerged, but they will explode above the surface. Zhu from China, a really good start across as well. Ryan Murphy got off those blocks very well. He's going to try and steal this from lane number two, Murphy. Zhu already is starting to put in some really nice strokes. Let's see what he turns out. Will he go in 24 again? He does. 24.88 at the 50-meter mark. Even faster than this morning, Ryan Murphy close in second. A fantastic underwater for Murphy. Murphy's putting the foot down right now. It's a great 25 meters off the wall. He's starting to fatigue, bouncing up and down a little. It's the Italian Thomas Cechol coming through the field. Cechol, gold. Zhu, silver. Murphy, bronze.
