Leylah Fernandez vs Heather Watson | R1 Prudential Hong Kong 2024 | #WTA Highlights

Yeah, nice backhand, nice angle from Fernandes. Stayed low. Nice angle from Fernandes. Stayed low. This is an early struggle for Watson on serve. Two really. And there as well. Fairly routine backhand dumped into the net. Real let off there for Watson. Yeah, that's much better from Fernandes. What a fabulous point she constructed there. Or left. Fernandes comes through. It's been a bitty start really for Fernandes. Yeah, much better that from Fernandes with the forehand. Oh, it's a special one. Too short that return from Fernandes. Another double. Could be one of those matches. Make that six. Watson is broken. Well, you felt it coming really. Tried to guide that down the line, Watson, but just slip. Double faults are never too far away for both players. She'll head back to her chair. Very happy. Not there yet though. Well, Watson's going to look at this. It's not a bad idea because this looks mighty close. Expected to call. Forehand. That's very nice. And a hole to love for Watson. Would not be 15 lead even though she sent down that double. Yeah, best service game, not only by Watson, but by either player in this match there. Oh, she gave Watson a sight of it. Fernandes had the whole court to choose from, but sent it right back to Watson's backhand. It was primed. It is number six by quite some margin. Good serve there. Not anymore. Watson is definitely serving the better, but she has a set point now. Fernandes, a little short that from Watson. And it's wide, and Fernandes takes the first set. Much better game there. Got off to a fast start. Fernandes in this service game, but the same old problem. She won't take the third either. Fernandes, fine. Again, Watson quick to that return. Watson unlucky there. Fernandes was scrambling. I knew she was in big trouble, the Canadian. Oh, she's lucky, Fernandes. Watson miscued the backhand. Crafty play from Fernandes there. The little backhand slice staying low down. That's a lovely volley. That is Heather Watson at her best. One game all. Just helped into that corner by Fernandes, who flirted with the lines. Watson looking down, giving it a glare. This was close there, and this was also close the winner. Very close, goodness me. Good serve also. A couple of types. Fernandes with three golden chances. Three golden chances to get 3-1 up in the second set. Much better all round. From the Canadian. Yeah, more positive as well. Coming in behind those serves. Yeah, right on that line. Watson fights away. Yeah, Watson takes it. Battling as she always does, Heather. Battling as she always does, Heather Watson, and the crowd appreciates it. Yet again, Leila Fernandes from a position of... No, Heather, no. What a shame for Watson. Yeah, she's frustrated. You saw her just hitting the racket there. Turns away in disgust. The double faults have... Yeah, better forehand that time. Flat and low, good angle from the Canadian. Then a lovely serve out wide, and she does. It's a hole to love for Fernandes. Well, better late than never on serve. Well, this is all Heather Watson can do now. Has to send up. Oh, wow. Lovely connection. Too short. Fernandes. Oh, she does. Gets it to juice, and now really turns the screw on the Watson serve.
