Jay takes on the hardest hike in Hope, BC - the Hope Mountain Summit Trail - and climbs to the top for an epic view of the city of Hope and the Fraser Valley. For avid hikers, this is a trail not to be missed and well worth the effort to get to the summit.

Hope Mountain, also known as Mount Hope, has an elevation of 1,844 m (6,050 feet) and stands at the south east side of town. It is the northernmost peak of the Skagit Range in the Cascade Mountains and towers above the confluence of the Coquihalla and Fraser rivers.

THE TRAIL: The Hope Mountain Summit Trail is a difficult 11 km (6.8 miles) in and out trail with an elevation gain of 802 meters (2631 feet). It starts out in an evergreen forest, then gets steeper and rockier as you continue up. After reaching the first peak, there are far fewer trees, larger boulders, and big rock outcroppings. By the time you get to the summit, it is mostly rock.

GETTING THERE: The trailhead for the Hope Summit trail can be found by driving 7 km east of Hope on Hwy 3. Turn right onto the Mount Hope Forest Service Road (FSR) and drive about 8 km to the trailhead that is marked by a sign and parking lot. Getting to the trailhead requires a vehicle with 4x4 capabilities and high clearance as the road to the FSR is in rough shape.

WHAT TO BRING: Be sure to bring enough water for the hike. There are no services available on this trail. Depending on the weather conditions, micro-spikes may be needed if there is snow at the top. The trail is steep and can be slippery in spots, so good hiking boots/shoes are a must. Always dress in layers appropriate for the season when hiking in BC.
