Contraception, or birth control, is the use of natural or artificial methods to prevent pregnancy.
Female contraceptive methods can be categorized into 5 types.
Mechanical barriers.
Hormonal contraceptives.
Intra-uterine contraceptive devices.
Female sterilization.
And emergency contraception.
Female condom was launched in the year 2000 in Australia as an effective barrier contraceptive method.
It has a success rate of about 95%.
In addition to contraception, female condom also prevents both partners from getting sexually transmitted infections.
Female condom is made-up with a soft plastic cover and an outer ring, and a polyurethane inner ring.
A silicone-based lubricant is applied on both inside and outside of the condom.
One end of the condom is an open end, and the other end is an open one.
The Closed end is inserted into the vagina before intercourse.
Open end should cover the front of the vagina following insertion.
Just like the male condom, female condom can be used only once.
And it is not necessary for the male partner to wear a condom when female partner wears one.
Unlike the male condom, which can be damaged by heat, light, and humidity, the female condom is both strong and durable.
The female condoms' greater coverage of the female genitals also offers extra protection for both partners.
Female condoms are suitable for both vaginal and anal intercourse, and they can be bought over the counter without any prescription.
It has minimal or no side effects and is not expensive either.
However, some women can get allergic reactions and urinary tract infections rarely.
It is important to keep in mind that female condom is not an effective long-term contraceptive option, and it is more appropriate for short-term use.
