Why is the ocean so terrifying? Perhaps it's what's hiding beneath the waves. Strange creatures
lurking in the darkness and ancient secrets buried on the seafloor. From a massive underwater animal
that shocked pilots to a professional diver who was nearly dragged to his doom. Today's episode
is going to explore three disturbing alleged accounts that all took place deep in the ocean.
You won't want to miss this one.
On the morning of July 20th, 1965, Captain Marvin McCamas and Bill Rainey boarded a small DSRV,
or Deep Submergence Research Vessel, named Alvin. On this day, they had planned to conduct
a dive survey of Artemis, which is a network of underwater hydrophones that are used to analyze
and study sounds captured in the ocean. They set out into the Atlantic Ocean in a location known as
the Tongue of the Ocean. And this oceanic trench is located between the islands of Andros and New
Providence in the Bahamas and is quite simply massive. Once the Alvin approached this trench,
it descended deeper and deeper into this crevasse until it reached around 5,000 feet. And from
there, McCamas and Rainey noticed this slight outcrop on the side and decided to descend another
300 feet underneath that. And at this time, the cable they had followed spanned the entirety of
the crevasse. And as they continued to descend, they noticed what appeared to be the cable
kind of drifting out in what they had suspected was a slow current. But after both captains had
checked that the sub was stationary, they discovered it was actually this cable-like object
that had been moving. And the next thing that ran through their minds was that this was just
an underwater Navy utility pole due to the sheer thickness. But they were still too far away and
needed to get closer to get a better view. This meant not only moving in that direction, but
also angling the sub so they would be able to clearly see this strange pole. After getting
close enough, they both realized that this was not a pole or a cable like they had thought.
