While casseroles might have their roots in the United States, also here in Germany,
we have traditional dishes prepared in the oven, both sweet and savory. We're gonna start this
video with a classic dish and this is Rosenkohlauflau. To make this one, you need boiled
sprouts, sauce, and cheese. The sauce is made with butter, onions, and flour, as well as cream
and vegetable broth mixed together. The casserole is easy to assemble. We just need the vegetables
and then we pour the sauce all over them. The last step is to add a bit of cheese on the top
and the casserole dish goes into the oven for at least 20 minutes. The dish is actually pretty
time-consuming but extremely delicious. Grisauflauf is perfect for this time of the year.
It is a semolina and quark casserole and it reminds a bit of the cheesecake. The batter
is made with egg quark, so the German farmer cheese, similar to cream cheese, semolina,
sugar, and baking powder. Now you're gonna need to mix the dough with a bit of apple slices
and then put the rest of the apple slices on the top of the dish. This has a sour and sweet
taste and also a nice and creamy consistency. I really did eat it straight from the casserole.
Nudelauflauf is the next one that I'm gonna mention and this is a one pot dish, so it's also
the quickest to make. Here we will be mixing everything in one casserole dish. So first we're
adding crushed garlic, parmesan cheese, tomato puree, and mustard, as well as salt and marjoram.
Then we add the cream and the broth to it and combine all the ingredients with a whisk. Now
it's the time to add the ham cubes and uncooked pasta. I am using here macaroni and on the top
I'm also adding some cheese. You need to put this dish in the oven for at least 35 minutes. This
actually turned out great, moist, but not too saucy. So next time I will be for sure adding a bit
more sauce. Nevertheless, the taste of this was amazing. But well, what doesn't taste great with
a cream? Kirschenmischel is another one that I've already showed you before. If you have a
bread, you really need to make this one. It's a type of the German bread and butter pudding,
but a bit better in my opinion. Here the baguette is sliced and soaked with a warm liquid that is
made of milk, sugar, and vanilla. Then the whole thing is covered with a mixed butter, sugar,
cinnamon, and egg. So first we need to put the bread slices and then the sour cherries from the
and on the top a bit of almonds. I also covered the dish after baking with the powdered sugar
that I caramelized. The casserole tastes really well with the vanilla sauce. This time I left
the best till the end. This is the Pfannkuchenauflauf and it's for sure my favorite.
To make the pancake casserole, I am obviously making the German pancake. Those will be filled
with a minced meat sauce made of onions, peppers, carrot, minced meat, and tomatoes from the can.
The sauce is seasoned with marjoram and salt and I also added some tomato puree to improve
the consistency. On the side I have also prepared bechamel sauce that ensures that there is actually
enough liquid in the casserole and I think that it balances very nicely the strong minced meat
sauce. So I fill the pancake with a minced meat sauce and I put the pancakes over the bechamel
next to each other in the casserole. The rest of the space I also fill with remaining sauce. And now
it's the time to cover the dish with the cheese. The thing that I love the most about this is that
the pancakes stay very soft which makes the consistency of the whole dish exceptional.
And now it's time for you to inspire me and let me know in the comments down below
what is your favorite casserole. Thanks for watching, stay safe and healthy. Bye!
