Buddha was staying in the Deer Park in Sarnath.
Monks had gathered around him to listen to his sermon.
One monk asked about the challenges he was facing
because of his habit of doing everything at the last moment.
Buddha told them the story of a king named Sachetana.
King Sachetana was worried about an invasion of his country.
He expected in the next six months.
He went to the royal chariot maker and told him
He asked him if he can make a pair of wheels for his chariot.
The chariot maker answered that he will make the wheels in the next six months.
He completed the wheels in the next five months and three weeks
and went to the king and informed him that the wheels were ready.
King was very happy to see the quality of work.
He asked him again that he is expecting the war to start in the next six days.
The chariot maker said that he can make a pair of spare wheels
for the royal chariot in the next six days.
After six days, he returned to King Sachetana with the new pair of wheels.
King was surprised to see that the new wheels
looked the same as the previous one completed in six months.
He asked him why he needed six months to make the first wheels
when he can easily make the same wheels in six days.
The chariot maker replied,
Lord, the pair of wheels look identical but they are very different.
Let me demonstrate.
He took the new wheel completed in six days and pushed the wheel.
The wheel went rolling on the ground.
It kept going for some distance and then it started losing its speed and balance.
It fell after making some irregular rotations.
Then he pushed the wheel which has taken him six months to build.
It also stopped after covering some distance but this time
the wheel did not lose balance and did not fall.
It remained upright.
The king was surprised to see the results.
He asked the chariot maker the reason why the wheel made in six days lost its balance
but the one made in six months remained upright.
The chariot maker explained that the wheel built in six days had faulty movement
and the axle and the spokes of the wheel were also not flawless
and had many defects which needed rectifications.
But the rotation of the second wheel was flawless as its spokes and axle were faultless.
He had worked for six months testing the wheel
and weeding out every kind of fault and irregularities in its parts.
That's why he was able to deliver the best product possible.
The pair of wheel built in six days was made at the last minute
and it has not gone through quality checks.
Buddha told the monks that they should continuously weed out
every kind of weakness and flaw to attain enlightenment.
Enlightenment can never come with last-minute desperate efforts.
It needs continuous hard work undertaken over a period.
The wheels made in six months and six days may look identical from the outside
but their characters are very different inside.
