Safeco Plaza - 2024 IALD Award of Merit

The repositioning of Safeco Plaza started with reimagining the lobby as a glowing lantern to restore the building's iconic presence in downtown Seattle.  The solution utilizes 306 custom-designed pendants interconnected to create a pervasive array delicately floating below the lobby ceiling. The design team carefully considered every detail of the fixture. The pendant array is painted to match and is rigorously aligned to the building's structure, creating a new feature element within the lobby that feels original. Elegant in its simplicity and compelling in its repetition, the result is stunning. The tower floats magically above the luminous lobby.

The 2024 IALD International Lighting Design Awards was celebrated in a San Diego, California, presentation event. Twenty-eight projects from ten countries were recognized and applauded for demonstrating exceptional lighting design and contributing to the professional community.

Now in its 41st year, the IALD International Lighting Design Awards is the longest-running program that recognizes architectural lighting design excellence. Receiving an IALD award is universally heralded as the top honor in the lighting design industry. Since its inception in 1983, the IALD International Lighting Design Awards has honored lighting design that reaches new heights, moves beyond the ordinary, and represents excellence in aesthetic and technical design achievement.
